I'm wondering what experience anyone has had with Rose's financial aid. From what I hear, many students get it, but they don't get a substantial amount. At least that's the impression I get. I saw a statistic indicating that about 73% of students receive need-based money, and I also saw that academic scholarships are available, as well. What are your experiences, or what have you heard about Rose's financial situation?

financial aid and rose hulman? HAHAHAHAHAHA. oh boy, I haven't laughed that hard in awhile. That must be the 3rd biggest gripe here (below girls and course load). You will not get a lot. I don't know a single person who goes here that has a significant amount of financial aid. Sure, if you live in indiana and get the Lilly scholarship, then you're fine, but don't count on Rose giving you much at all. I have about 5 grand in merit based aid, but in terms of financial aid, the people who have that don't get a ton. I know one kid who couldn't go to classes for the first few days of the 2nd quarter b/c he hadn't paid totally. Of course you don't know how much you'll get until they tell you, but don't expect anything too significant.

I'll second that. My son was accepted last year but because of very little financial aid he did not attend. Their package included a ton of loans.

yeah i think its the reason i'm not going to go to Rose - i got in but its pretty expensive without any aide. I am not getting financial aide anywhre, but too middle of the pack here to get merit. oh well

My D ended up not attending Rose, but she was offered 1/2 tuition and a laptop in merit aid.

Wow! That's amazing, considering the amount of aid they usually give. If you don't mind my asking...what were your daughter's stats? I'm a 1530 SAT with comparable stats in other areas, and I'm praying for 1/6 tuition.

y2k- My D's stats were comparable to yours. I have a feeling that her aid pkg. may have been helped by her gender, too. Are you M or F? It was interesting to see that the aid offer came in the spring, after her early fall acceptance. The Finaid dept. operates independently from the admissions office, as is usually the case, but since she thought she wouldn't be getting any merit aid for quite some time, the school wasn't a high contender on her list. If the scholarship offer had come sooner, it could have possibly changed the outcome.

It is quite interesting that admit decisions come much quicker than aid decisions...I'm still waiting on my aid.

You're probably right about your D's gender's helping a bit with the aid...I'm a guy, so I doubt I'll get quite as much aid as she...but it's nice to know that they're giving out that much aid to SOMEone...gives me hope!

Have you accepted your spot at RH or is your decision contingent on your aid pkg.? Good luck and hope you hear soon!

I've not accepted yet...I've applied to some schools that provide cheaper base tuition (Rice, Georgia Tech, etc.), so my decision does depend on financial aid. But my parents and I are willing to pay more/take out loans for more money at Rose than at other schools because it's such a great fit for me. Thanks for your encouragement!

I also haven't rec'd an aid pkg yet, but i'll let you know if I get anything. I have pretty much ruled out going to RH due to its location being too remote and cold. So, unless the financial aid is stellar, it's out. I got into GA Tech as well, and i've got a couple others i'm waiting on before deciding, but GA Tech is my fall back at this point.

:)

We're uh, kind of close to Indy... And it really isn't that cold here. I'm from Philly and the weather is pretty much the same. Now with Rose being remote compared to a lot of other schools, we do have the strongest community of any college ever, I'm certain of it. Name one other college where you can leave your room unlocked 24 hours a day and not even entertain the thought of someone taking something. Heck, People leave their laptops out in the open in the union and just leave for a few hours. No one takes them. That's one thing about this place that you can't get at another school. So think about that I guess before you rule us out too quickly. And for any guys reading this, uh, forget everything I just said. :-p

Well, i'm from South Florida... below 70 degrees is cold to me :-P

Anyhow, it's not totally ruled out, but pretty close. Sorry:(

Well, I finally got my aid package. Not really all that amazing, but at least I got something. No need-based aid, but got $7,000 (1/4 tuition) in merit stuff, plus a laptop loan program and a little Stafford loanage.

Do you mind posting your stats?

Not in the least.

White male.
SAT: 1530: 780M, 750V.
SAT IIs: Bio 800; Math IIC 750; Writing 760
ACT: 33: 35 M, 33V, 30 S (ick)
GPA: uw ~3.8; w ~4.4
Many AP classes, accelerated classes
ECs: Many church trips and church leadership stuff. Showed a strong interest in video editing...I've done a lot of different videos for school, church, home, etc.

Biomed33: How seriously are you considering Rose? Also...what sorts of biomed stuff do you want to do? I'm not going to major in it at Rose because the major's so new and undefined, but I'm planning on doing bioelectrical stuff in grad school (EE major at Rose, hopefully). I have a friend who worked with heart defibrulators who got me very interested in the field...he was a really brilliant guy...although he told waaaaay too many frozen hampster baseball stories :0

y2kwizard,

My d has similar stats to yours and received the exact same offer from Rose in mail Saturday. Here's a tip. She has a male friend that is a freshman at Rose this year. He had similar stat and also received the same offer. They went to Fin. Aid and asked for more and received another $3k/yr without any problem. It doesn't hurt to ask. My d has decided on another school so I will not pursue more $ from Rose.

Thanks for the tip. I've heard of people's appealing to various colleges for more aid, but I haven't looked for any successful Rose appeal stories. And you're right...it certainly can't hurt to ask.

I am going to keep my options open but thinking about biomechanics. I am still not sure which school waiting on a few more finaid packages and decision letters. I am leaning a little towards GA Tech right now.

y2k- congrats on thr merit aid!
