Financial Aid

Anybody familiar with Tulane's finaid packages? The more I read about Tulane, the more I realllly want to go there. I got a 14,000 dollar scholarship, but unless I get a lot of grants (my EFC is 0 so I really am paying all by myself), there's no way.

i second this.....

Merit aid is based mostly on your credentials - a high component of SATs possibly modified by GPA and ECs. You could appeal - always worth a shot - and possibly get a few more $$, but you won't get a full ride - that is the DHS, which required an application due in December. More info here: http://www.tulane.edu/~finaid/

There are other threads on finances / merit aid on CC - and all the schools are pretty competitive with each other - so do some homework on those threads to form your strategy.

Wait, CT2010Dad: you don't think I'm going to get any more aid that's not loans? I just submitted the FAFSA, won't they take that into account? Ahhhh I hate money:(

You might, Ebola. There's also the Tulane need-based grant. My son has one of those. It's not huge, but it's useful. He also has work-study, which is not a loan. (and a non-work-study job, which pays more.) You just have to be willing to work a bit. And some of the loans are a good deal, including the Perkins and the SUBSIDIZED Stafford. Wait until you see the whole package they offer before you let yourself get upset. You don't have to take every piece.

Remember, Merit Aid is based on credentials. Need based aid - which includes grants - is based on need. But like you - and lots of others - the whole financial aid process is pretty much a mystery to me. Our D got merit scholarships from some surprising places, with pretty much no consistency (for example, some much lower ranked safety schools offered a fraction of what she - and you - got).

But you write something that confuses me - your EFC (I thought it means Expected Family Contribution) is 0. Which I think means that your family is not expected to contribute anything. Which, I think, means you should be eligible for a pretty good financial package. But on this one perhaps someone else with more knowledge can weigh in.

Your best bet is to scour the financial aid web site, and then talk with the financial aid counselors.

ebola, i'd be surprised if your official FA offer did not contain some substantial need-based grants as well as loans.

hey sorry to interject on this thread...but do they give out music scholarships?

I don't know, JB. I'm responding only because no one else seems to know, either. Why not give them a call about that or send an e-mail on Monday. Have you read every word on their finaid site?
Good luck to you!
