GWU prides itself as being the top university in the nation in giving out the most financial aid. But how many people recieve this aid and how much money is given?

....and also....say you do get finanicial aid.....is the financial for just one year or for each of the four years?

I know through a frienf who got 15,000 a year for 4 years, which is not much when toition is so high, but some people got more than that. still, it makes the tuition about 40 a year, which puts it at a more affordable level.
I heard they are good at that, but your gpa must be maintained at 3 and up

According to the College Board Website, GWU is listed as meeting 91% of need on the average. College Board Listing

I believe that this calculation is based on the government's (FASFA) calculation of need, so this is 91% of costs in excess of the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). This is a pretty good % - but also it is an average.

Also financial aid will include loans and need based grants...which is very different from merit scholarships which are for your academic excellence. You can search CC for as many postings as you can find for students who received scholarships and their stats if they reported them.

I'm sure there are definately some students and families attending GWU who are paying their way - or a significant part of it.

Going into GW, I needed a lot of aid and received little. I was expecting about 40k per year in aid but only received a 10k loan and a 2k grant.

I received good grades in my first semester, which got me a 7k grant. I got more good grades in my second semester, which got me an additional 7k grant. So now I am receiving 16k in grants and 10k in loans.

So it is not so bad if you expect to receive good grades. But if you cannot afford it and are not likely to do well, expect to pay close to full tuition.

aid is guaranteed for 4 years too.

I had to choose between Johns Hopkins and GW. Hopkins gave me almost nothing, so I chose GW.
At GW, I am receiving about 45k in grant mostly need-based, so I pay about 5k per year. The good thing is that a lot of people are in the same boat as I am. The aids are guaranteed for 4 years if you maintain a 2.0 GPA for need-base grants and 3.5 (or 3.0 depending on the scholarship) GPA for merit-base grants.

what did you do to get a 45k grant??

you have to be poor basically because grants are need based. i got 15k plus a 15k scholarship plus i actually got more but got some outside scholarships so they reduced their aid. i ended up paying about 7-8k per year.

From the Financial AId Sourcebook"
Q. Do I have to reapply for aideach year?
A. Yes, Although merit aid and the GW Guaranteed Grant will be renewed automatically if you completed the number of credits and attained the GPA required for your award, any additional need based financail assistance provided through the Office of Student Financial Assistance requires reapplication annually.

Yes, most aid is renewed as long as you have good standing (i.e. a 2.0). As for meeting your need each year, GW is pretty good about that. I applied for aid literally the week school started one semester and still received like $38,000 in grants/scholarship.
