sorry, but this is my first aid package and i was wondering what exactly is the amount offered if you look online...

It would vary from person to person, no?

no i meant, as in terms, would it be "Academic Year Totals"
but that includes loans for me...sry, i'm confused...i'll just wait for my dad to look

When I printed out the report that was online, it gave amounts for:

Academic scholarship (Anticipated)

NU scholarship

Fedl Sub Stafford Loan

Federal Work Study

And then it gave an estimate of costs, whose total was $52470

And then it gave amounts for Family Contribution, Other Resouces, Total Need, and Unmet Need.

I got nothing but loans : (

Off to UCSD for me

My mom is dying for me to go to UCSD, too. It would only cost us <$3000/year.

Nothing but loans here too. : (

Any chance that the online FA packages are incorrect? XD

Unlikely :/

^^^i have mostly loans...i'm sooo depressed now
:(

it was my first financial package, so i had to go through it with my mom
it turns out i'm covered over 70%. I haven't really thought about nu too much. If I don't end up going there, hopefully some of this generous aid will spread to more needy people.

how are you guys getting loans if supposedly northwestern removed loans from their financial aid packages?

No, they definitely did not remove loans. That's the only bad part of going to NU...my parents and I will be swimming in debt when I leave.

They capped loans at 20k, supposedly.

they removed loans if your contribution is <20% COA i think or something like that. i didnt get any loans; they covered 44k, and i am incredibly incredibly grateful.

arbiter: Trust me, they didn't....I got about twice that offered to me in loans. Unless the 20k cap only applies to NU loans, not federal.

The NU financial aid is for 2008-2009. What happens for the next 3 years? Does anyone know if we are guaranteed at least the same amount?

From NU's Financial Aid FAQ's:

"Is my financial aid going to change from year to year?

Northwestern is committed to offering a consistent aid package throughout the undergraduate years. If a family's financial circumstances have not changed much from year to year, then they can expect a similar package. Fluctuations of income, assets, family size, and number of students in college may affect a student's aid package."

No promises, but "committed" whatever that means.

So, if we win the million dollar lottery it may hurt us!

Thanks for the info!

How much does it typically change if your sibling in college stops going to college?

The EFC is divided by the number of children in college.

So if your EFC is based on having 2 kids in college at the same time, it would double if one stops going to college.
