Financial Aid

for those who got accepted or people from last year who got financial aid, do you guys know how much would I get?
so far, all I know is that my EFC is 0.
What is your estimate cost??
I am so confused on this financial aid thing.
So, do i get financial aid and those like pell grant and other grants?
or, pell grant and other grants are like in the financial aid?

So confused..

I would recommend emailing the Buffalo financial aid office or giving them a call.

When did other people get their aid letters from UB?

UB is sending out FA letters to accepted students sometime in the next few weeks. They'll probably do it on a rolling basis, so if you were in the first rounds of regular admissions, you should be in the first round of letters as well.

Your award letter should include a Pell Grant of $5,350, ACG (if you qualify) of $750, Stafford subsidized loan of $3,500, Stafford unsubsidized loan of $2,000, and may include work study (if you're not EOP), FSEOG, and a Perkins or Health Professions loan (either of which are subsidized). If you're instate, it will probably include a NYS TAP award around $5,000 (or maybe not since the budget hasn't passed yet, but some amount will be forthcoming if you did your HESC application). If you got a scholarship, I think you'd know by now but that will also be on your FA notification. That's my best "guesstimate" - my D is also waiting for her offer from UB, but we know what to expect based on others she's received!

BTW, have you sent in your deposit for UB yet? Just curious...

so.
that pell grant and stuffs are in financial aid thing??
hmm
i thought it was like a separate thing.
well
I got 7,500 dollars for scholarships and i live in nj.
well and i think buffalo's cost is about 25K.
so..
would they fully cover the fee??

and yes. I already have done that. :)

Highly unlikely they're going to offer you enough to fully cover the $25K COA, but it looks like you'd definitely get at least $19K with the scholarship, Pell, ACG, and Staffords. Don't know how much additional need based aid/loans they'll offer, my guess is it'll be more loans and work study but it's a wait and see. If you're prepharm you may be offered a subsidized Health Professions Loan. Was the scholarship from UB or another source?

Last year my son was informed about his merit scholarship when his financial aid package came. Just as a reference point, he was awarded 2500 a year for 2 years with SAT's of 1900 and an unweighted GPA of 3.7. I think the highest merit is 5000 a year for four years.

The priority finaid deadline was 3/1... so, if you filed by then, you should be one of the 1st to receive i just hope it comes before accepted students weekend... ive made up my mind... im going to UB, but i need my money 1st

D received her FA letter today from UB. It was very good and met 100% of need. They over-estimated the room/board and transportation costs in figuring the COA so she won't even need the unsubsidized loans. So happy!

You can call the BIRD system @ 716-645-7800 and get your award by phone (use your month & yr of birth as password the first time you call). Note: UB's award doesn't inlcude ACG money until they verify you qualify for it later and BIRD didn't give any estimated TAP award which was on the FA letter.

Does anyone else think it's strange that their meal plans don't include lunch?

sk8rmom, congrats, that's very good!

It's odd their meal plans don't include lunch...but what is ACG money?

Hi,
I got the email also.
They fully covered the fee.
total of 27773. which is the total fee for out of state students.
Is this rare or do many ppl get this much of money.

Nats - Academic Competitiveness Grant. It's $750 for freshmen, $1300 soph. You have to be Pell eliglible and completed a rigorous course of study in HS (in NY I think it's the Regents Diploma w/Honors or Adv Designations but there's a list somewhere on the web of what each state's qualifying diploma is).

Congrats wsb! So happy to hear that you weren't gapped either. The good thing about UB is that they just had a tuition increase and typically don't raise it again for 5+ years. I don't know if it's rare for them to meet need for OOS, but I know mom from PA (son also in pharmd and got honors college and schol.) who said it brought the cost down to levels of PA public schools. I think SUNY is very good about trying to bring it down to the EFC level (which for us was 0). Did you get a scholarship from UB?

Sk8r- Ah ok, cool. I have completed that. Looking forward to hearing what's in store.

they gave me about 4800 in financial aid, im a transfer student

Buffalo does not meet 100% of need. So congrats to all who got full need covered. They do give good merit money. I had "heard" that they tend to give full need to those who do get merit awards. Otherwise you are likely gapped.

they gave me 10,000 and change, making it only 5,000 and change for college.
i pay 7,600 for my high school. lol

they are making it hard for me to choose other schools. im going to visit soon, hopefully i like it.

Cpt - My D didn't get any scholarship money from UB - this was her only school without merit and the only school that met 100% need. We're residents but OP is not, so I'm thinking it's the O EFC that triggered full need met.

This probably helped too:

"Applications from the New York City area are up 12 percent at UB, which boosted institutional aid by $1 million to help incoming students during this bad economy, officials said. "

Economy driving record number of applicants to SUNY schools : City & Region : The Buffalo News

sorry for the mistake i got a whopping 15000 dollars from UB not the measly 4800 like i stated before lol (this is from financial aid only) not including scholarships. MY BAD! no one take notice to my earlier reply

Congrats David! I was wondering how you ended up with less than the Stafford amount!
