Financial Aid??

Was anyone else’s package not what they expected? I thought I was shafted with the aid, I was hoping for a much bigger grant. I'm just wondering what the general consensus was...

i completely agree. see my thread for details

That's a really bummer man, you should have definitely received some type of merit aid. I was talking more about grants, loans, and work study program though. With the recession how can they give us such minimal packages like this, I'm highly disappointed. Honestly, I expected to get a much bigger grant but I guess it just wasn't in the cards. I will most certainly be calling the financial aid office on Monday morning to present my case...

i am not satisified with my financial aid either.
i don't know whether if it is work, but i will call to the financial aid office on monday too.

What do you consider a small amount? If the total cost is around $48,000 per year what would you expect would be a good aid package?

the total cost that syracuse estimated is about $51,000 per year.
and from the financial aid reward i find that i will probably get $47,000 a year. Technically, i should be satisfied, but i have like $7,500 loans a year...which makes me anxious...

You should consider yourself lucky soda. I was only given 12,000 betweens work study, a Syracuse grant, and subsidized and unsubsidized loans. Quite frankly this is somewhat of an insult, because according to Syracuse they met 86% of your financial need. I was hoping for at least 12000 in money that I wouldn't have to pay back and then about 8000 in loans. At the moment there is no way my parents and I can afford this, so all I can do is make my case and pray for the best.

knight: I am not getting ANYTHING in aid except for a loan of $5500 and I don't think that a) that would really alleviate the cost much and b) I want to take on a loan in general. My household income is $0.00. I got NO grants, NO work study, NO scholarships. They REALLY screwed up their fin aid this year. This is going to make or break me going.

Sorry to hear that man, the package is also going to make or break me as well. No doubt that the packages were screwed up, this is an asbolute joke. In todays day and age getting in is no longer the problem, but rather affording it. College has become solely for the rich..

I just sent a pretty distraught email. They'll either sympathize with me or hate me hahah either way, I hope I get a response that clears up this confusion. FML

That's what you have to do man, it's not like they're going to rescind your acceptance over a distraught e-mail. I feel the phone is a bit more effective way of getting my point across, so I'm just going to wait until Monday and call. I hope it all works out for the both of us!!

yea, i was totally disagree with it. they didn't even have a merit on it

i guess you guys just submit the fasfa things. i submit the fasfa, CSS and TAP.
i am looking for other finanical aid now...omg..syracuse is so expensive.

Here are some things I have heard...as an alumni, we were asked for special donations to keep about 800 kids in school this year due to the economy. They would not have been able to stay in school so SU was seeking help for further donations rather than dip into more financial aid for them. That had me nervous in the beginning. An article in the Daily Orange mentioned the applicant pool this year was LOWER than previous years (most schools are higher due to the early 1990's baby boom) and they think it is the economy. They planned on offering more kids financial aid due to the economy, which means basically more kids, lower packages. On a local newcast in Syracuse, Lemoyne and Syracuse reps said they expected to increase acceptances this year 10-20% to hopefully get the # of kids they need, due to lower financial aid packages and therefore more declines from accepted kids. I know at my S school, a small prestigious LAC, their endowment was severely hurt by the stock market crash, and many kids were going to be leaving if they couldn't raise more money for financial aid. I think you should plead your case to the Financial Aid people, but that is some background to help understand where the colleges are coming from. Don't take it personally, these are tough times for everyone!
