How is it at BU? I’ve already gotten into several other school, McGill, Cornell (Likely Letter), UMich, and a few others, so cost is gonna be a pretty big factor in where I go. Does BU give out scholarships? Or is it lots of loans?

Any help here? I applied to their SMED program but no inteview, probably because all my recs got kinda screwed over.

Honestly this is probably pretty subjective. BU has been shifting from more of a need-based rather than merit-based system, or a combination of the two. Fin aid has been good for me but I know other students who haven't been as lucky. Cost was the biggest factor for me too, so I'm glad things worked out. I have had great experience with renegotiating aid, so if you think you should get more, don't hesitate to call the office.

My parents are really against loans of any sort for undergrad, and they can only afford between 7 and 10 thousand a year, so I was wondering if there was any chance i would be get enough aid to only have to pay about 10 thousand a year (meaning grants/scholarships and not loans). I'm second in my class and have a 2200 SAT score, and I've heard that BU is generous with their aid and not too many loans, so I'm wondering if anyone could give me any insight.

BU's financial aid has been fantastic with my sister. Mostly grants - not many loans. If you really need the money, I'd say maybe coming out with 20,000 to pay at the end of four years in loans. Not sure. From my parents experience BU has been superb. Let's hope it continues for us.

When will we hear if any Financial Aid is being awarded? Son got in via ED back in December but we're curious if he'll get any type of grant, aid, etc. Thanks.

call and ask them, that would be my best bet. i kept waiting and then it turned out they werent awarding me ANYTHING so i called and screamed a bit and the only thing they decided to give me was the dean's scholarship. but hey, $10,000 off a year is better than nothing.

when you say enough aid to "cover tuition" are you speaking about grant/scholarship aid or are you including loans as well.

I don't really regard loans as aid since loans will pretty much be available regardless of the school. It is the grant aid and scholarships (things that don't need to be paid back) that really define a good aid award.

All but $1,200 is grant/scholarship for each one. They also have some direct student loan money that helps cover the balance and a little of the room and board. I will say I was pleasantly shocked when my first child received such a wonderful package, even more so when her sibling was given the same, 2 years later.

No, most financial aid packages do not include room and board. At BU, a freshman dorm plus dining plan amounts to about $11,500. Scholarship/grant money won't cover that, its usually just for tuition. Need-based aid may include Federal direct student loans or Perkins loans that can help with those expenses. After that you're pretty much on your own to make up the difference. I have no idea what an average package might be. Both of my kids say the majority of their friends don't have much (if any)aid, but most of these kids come from somewhat wealthy situations.

I got $30k, but I still don't think I can afford BU.

Okay I have a question, so freshmen HAVE to dorm first year right?
So what's the total cost (housing + tuition) that I can use to subtract my fin aid from to find my total amount of paying?
