Financial Aid

Did anyone else get bad financial aid? I can't go because I got none which seems like cruel and unusual punishment considering the fact that my parents made like no money this year

call student financial services and talk to someone

And if you have any need-based FA offers from other schools, be sure to see if Penn will match or beat them.

I sent them a 45K annual award from Wellesley before they let me know that I was getting ZERO financial aid.

So much for being a “no loan” school. I literally asked the lady who told me I was getting no money from Penn: “So you mean you would let me take 55K loans each year” and she said yeah.

Penn’s no-loan policy means that no FA AWARDED BY PENN will include loans–it doesn’t guarantee that a student and/or his/her family won’t have to take out loans to cover his/her expected financial contribution.

My financial aid package wasn’t even close to other schools.

test?: meaning that it was more or less generous than other schools’ packages?

They offered around $15,000 less a year than a couple other schools in aid.

Wow. Which were the schools that gave you more?

I have the same problem. According to their financial aid package, I would have to pay around 47 grand per year. My family makes about 10 grand more than that… so honestly, I have no idea how I will pay for Penn. I sent in my reevaluation form asking them to check my tax income and my fafsa again but there was no changes. So right now I’m racking my brain trying to think of how I will be able to afford this school.

emiflute, if what you’re saying is accurate, you should call Student Financial Services on the phone to explore this further. Assuming you’re a US (or other North American) citizen, the response you seem to have gotten does not jibe with Penn’s public pronouncements about the level of financial aid it currently provides, including the table on this page:

[A Look at the Facts, Comparing Penn’s Cost](Submit My Documents)

That happened to me, but then a couple weeks ago it was suddenly updated with aid (I didn’t even send in another evaluation form). You should call them to make sure though.

emiflute,

That sounds odd, crazy odd. Does your family have high assets (property and savings)?

I have heard mixed things about Penn. I know a parochial school teacher who has a modest home, husband and five children, all who are in parochial schools (discounted). Their eldest son’s bill for penn this year was 10K. Not sure what her spouse makes but talking to him it sounded like their family income is about 110K.

All the Ivies have their own formulas when it comes to “assets” inlcuding your house etc. Some are more transparent than others.

I called the financial office yesterday and I asked them why I have to pay so much. It seems as though our assets and equities are high. We just bought a house last year and we’re on mortgage at the moment. That’s the main reason why our financial aid package is so low. Plus the fact that my parents are self employed also contribute to the reason.
That makes sense right?

Anyways, I still need ways to find money. Scholarships…loans… here I come D=.
