How is financial aid at brown? I know there are no academic or athletic scholarships, any other forms of scholarship money you can get?

If you got some money, can you tell us about yourself and/or what you did to obtain the money?

I got $1000/yr. I actually didn't expect to get any, because my dad gets a stipend that covers half the tuition, but I assume since I have 2 brothers in college, I scored a little aid? I dunno.

finaid is crazy. If you need it youll get it. I couldnt afford my state school, but brown was so easy to afford, as they want me to pay for books and personal expenses. That means about 15% of my package was a loan and the rest was gift aid.

Then again its only easy when youre dirt-poor or stinking rich. If youre in the middle, youre kind of screwed.

Hmm...

As far as I know, Brown does not offer any merit-based scholarships. Everything is supposedly need-based.

My situation is different, but I'll share it anyway...so, let's see...I'm an '08 transfer student, and I got a lot of money, waaaaay more than what I am currently receiving from my current private college (BOO!). All I did was, er, apply for aid! Uhm, I guess by definition I'm middle class, although my parents are divorced...I'm not sure how that affected anything...it couldn't have had much of an impact, as Brown expects the non-custodial parent to pay as much as possible...in any case, I should think that Brown has plenty of money to give people aid if they truly need it.

:D Personally, I think finaid at Brown is GREAT! But I'm sure some people have been disappointed.

Can you apply for aid after acceptance? Maybe for the following years- would that appear odd?

I know Princeton Review rankings are considered crap, but last year Brown was on the list for students dissatisfied with fin aid.

hey matty- i come from a middle/ working class family and ended up getting a majority of tuition covered by brown scholarships. ill still accumulate about $16000 in debt over four years, but from what i hear thats not bad at all.
to apply, just make sure you know the deadlines for the fafsa and such. also, try to apply for some outside scholarships (you can find some at www.fastweb.com). if you get one, brown will let you cut down your loans, family contribution, or use the money to buy a computer- they send you a form where you can indicate which you want to do. anyways, outside scholarships wont decrease your brown scholarship so they can be especially helpful if your family falls in that middle ground where ppl get less aid.
finally, if you go to a brown program in your hometown, the director of financial aid, Mr. Bartini, will probably be there. Have a chat with him and definitely get his number (my mom did this and was able to get an early estimate on our aid package, which was nice).
hope this helps!
oh ps- the financial aid office also looks very favorably upon big families- dont know if that applies to you or not
