The financial aid office at UT is really frustrating me now. I called them about 3 different times and the person that I spoke with did not know anything I needed to know. Is there anyway I can get in contact directly with my counselor? How do I find out who my counselor/advisor is? I need to get an issue sorted out ASAP regarding the Top 10% scholarship because I'm afraid if I don't act soon then I will not be able to receive the scholarship. If you want to message me with any advice please feel free to do so. Also, anyone who has received the Top 10% scholarship can you help me out? Thanks.

Email is the best way to do so.

I don’t know about any top ten percent scholarship; that’s never existed before.

But financial aid packages for freshmen should have been finished a long time ago and once they determine your package they aren’t likely to change it.

Yeah I think it’s a new scholarship this year. How do I find out who to email? I tried searching for my advisor but I couldn’t find it on the UT website. Yeah I doubt they’ll give me the scholarship but it’s still worth a shot because the scholarship is $2000.

here is some information on it. It is for Texas residents, is both merit and need based, and required a FAFSA/TASFA to be complete and on file by April 1st. Also according to the website your high school counsellor is the one who must submit the list of eligible students from the HS. Have you checked with him/her?

Yeah I read all the information on the website. It says that to show financial need, one must have Cost of attendance (COA) - Expected family contribution (EFC) - Pell > $0. This is the case for me, but somehow I still was not awarded the scholarship. I’m pretty sure my counselor did submit all of the eligible students names in because some of my classmates received the scholarship. I am in the top 5% of my class. I also submitted my FAFSA in March. I tried calling the financial aid office multiple times but they did not know anything about why I was not awarded the scholarship. I should be eligible because I received the Top 10% scholarship from Texas A&M but not for UT.

If you aren’t poor a dirt you won’t get it…

try emailing the finaid office, but sometimes they don’t discuss financial info through emails. i got the top ten percent scholarhip from ut. it should be written in your financial aid package for either the fall or spring semester.

It will be for Fall only -not split 50/50 like most other aid. The state guidelines require that all the current Texas Top 10% funds be disbursed in 2009.

I tried using the Ask Don thing but it didn’t work. It said that that they can’t answer it on there because it involves personal matters. Is there a specific financial aid email address besides the Ask Don thing? Yeah it’s not in my financial aid package for either semester. As far as I know it’s suppose to be $2000 for fall semester only. I am dirt poor by the way I Hope UT lol.

Anyone have any advice or any suggestions? I am in desperate need of help because I really want to try and get this scholarship because it’s not just chump change its actually a good amount that can help greatly reduce the cost. Thanks.

Hope it works.

When my high school counselor met with the top 10% of our class, she explained that financial need meant that as long we demonstrated at least $1 of need on the FAFSA we would qualify for the State Top Ten Percent Scholarship. Here’s the hitch – it is distributed on a first-come, first-served basis until all of the reserved funds are depleted. So it seems that the FAFSA submission and college acceptance dates are factors in receiving the scholarship. Every bit of financial aid helps. Good luck!

I emailed them at finaid@utexas.edu but they didn’t reply. Are you sure its finaid@www.utexas.edu because I emailed it to finaid@UTEXAS.EDU because generally there is no www. in an email address. I can’t seem to get a hold of the financial aid office because it keeps putting me on hold and it never goes through even after like 30-45 min. Any advice or is it just a lost cause now?

Stay on hold! I work in financial aid at another large state university, and during peak times (May-August), wait times often exceed 45 minutes due to the huge volume of calls.

Try to find out the name of your financial aid counselor, I believe who it is is based alphabetically by your last name, then e-mail them directly and they should e-mail back pretty quick.

Stay on hold. I just talked to them. It took about 15 minutes of hold time. It sucks, but you can talk to a live person and get answers. The number, if you don’t have it, is 512-475-6282.

How can I find out the name of my financial aid counselor? My last name starts with a B if that helps.

I would just call the office and wait, usually the people that answer the phone can’t answer like super-specific stuff but they should be able to tell you who your counselor is and their e-mail address.
