Financial Aid?

Hows the aid at wake forest? any merit aid?

Merit aid is given to less than 3% of applicants.

Full merit scholarships are given to students typically in the top 1% of their class and 1500/1600+ SATs.

A good portion of the scholarships are for NC residents only though.

They promise a lot of need based aid, but in my case ultimately fell short. I’d be happy to provide more details, but I’m assuming you’re mostly asking about merit aid?

wjhsxc - I would like to hear more about your FA. S is considering Wake, Duke and Davidson and maybe UNC -Chapel Hill. He is OOS.

Our experience with FA was very positive. With a EFC of about $16,000, my son rcvd about $23,000 per year in grants plus the $4000 Perkins loan. It was the most generous pkg he rcvd and made it possible for him to attend Wake. We are very appreciative.

I had a meeting with President Hatch yesterday, and he concurred that Wake has the worst FA compared to its peer school. However, he stated that the Administration is currently working on making the FA more generous and it should be in effect hopefully by the next school year. He wants to cap the amount of loans given to all students and not just families which make less than $40,000.

I had several friends which attended Wake’s peer schools because of FA, one of them being Davidson.

DebateMom, I would say all the schools but UNC will have better FA for OOS than Wake currently. I heard OOS UNC is actually pretty generous for a public school… but with all the budget cuts, one cannot be sure.

Well, I got into both Wake and UNC CH early decision, and was really, really, really wanting to go to Wake. My family had an EFC of $4,000.
They offered $35,000 in grants, scholarships, and work study and about $14,000 in loans, which I still consider sort of generous-$35,000 is $35,000-and tried to rationalize it for a while, but really, $14,000 every year in addition to the $2,000 that wasn’t covered is a lot of debt to undertake. It would be like going to UNC without any aid at all…
However, I am here at UNC and will be paying about $300 for the entire year, thanks to grants, scholarships, and work study. I believe UNC tries to cap loans so that they only make up about 30% of your entire FA, and my award actually increased after the first month of school. And while I liked the size and feel of Wake better, I wouldn’t be able to major in linguistics or take Arabic, like I am now.
Also, I’ve heard that Duke’s FA is terrible, but then, it’s Duke. Most things are terrible there.

Thanks for all of the FA information. We have a couple of years so hopefully Wake will have a FA policy similar to Davidson.

Of the private schools that admitted my daughter last year…Emory, Richmond, Boston College, Denver and Wake Forest, Wake Forest had the poorest package.
