Financial Aid

How much financial aid can i expect from a private school that costs about 30,000 for tuition, how about a out of state public school that is about the same?

We need a LOT more info…

There isn’t a cut and dried answer…

Which schools are you wondering about?

What is your EFC (expected family contribution)?
If you don’t know, use this to get an idea… https://fafsa4caster.ed.gov/F4CApp/index/index.jsf

Are you a citizen or green card resident?

What is your home state?

BTW…you can’t just look at tuition, you have to look at Cost of Attendance (COA) - tuition, fees, room, board, books, misc.

I am looking at private colleges like Mercer University and Wofford College and a public university like Clemson (out of state). I am from northern Virginia and a citizen of the united states by birth. My dad is retired military and works for DOD. He makes upward of 150,000 a year. Im not exactly sure of an EFC, but we are in the middle of completing the FASFA and expect to get about 2,000 or less.
Total for Mercer, about the same as Wofford
In-state tuition and fees: $29,540
Out-of-state tuition and fees: $29,540
Room and board: $8,788
Books and supplies: $1,200
Estimated personal expenses: $1,201
Clemson
Out-of-state tuition and fees: $25,388
Room and board: $6,980
Books and supplies: $900
Estimated personal expenses: $1,920
Transportation expense: $2,360

If your dad earns $150k per year (and probably has decent assets), you will have a high EFC. I doubt you’ll get any aid at all; perhaps only a Stafford student loan.

If you go to that website above, you can get a guestimate of what your EFC will be. I’m guessing that your EFC will be in the $45k+ range based on income and likely savings/investments.

Are you a junior or senior?

How much can your parents pay each year?

BTW…an OOS public like Clemson won’t give you anything.

Are those all of your schools? What is your intended major?

How do you expect to get an EFC of 2,000 or less with a parent income of $150,000+? Or is one of those numbers a typo?

Need based financial aid is for low income families. It is unlikely you will get aid other than loans or merit based (no need involved) if your Dad’s income is $150k+.

then i guess we will get nothing, that really sucks. Wish the government could help out the middle class american.

I am a Senior, i think they can in reality pay 30,000 total if they had too, but would like to see some aid. My other schools are George Mason and UVA Wise for in state. I want to study industrial engineering and economics.

What are your stats?

You are from VA. You are very fortunate. You have great instate options at affordable prices especially if your family income is 150,000. Now, I know that some schools will be hard to get into coming from No. VA, but apply to some safeties public schools in VA too. There is nothing wrong with George Mason, as you mentioned.

I know, but i really want to get out of VA

Do you mean your parents will pay $30K/yr or $30K for all 4 years? For $30K/yr you would have many options. Even without strong stats, many of the private colleges in the $35K/yr range throw in a little discount for almost all. The types of schools fitting this description–2nd and 3rd tier-- will mostly be very happy to still accept your application.

They CAN pay 30,000 a year but are scared to pay that much incase i mess up. They want to see me prove myself. I really want to attend Clemson, Mercer or Alabama

Can you obtain merit aid instead of need aid? It’s hard to get need aid if your family is extremely affluent (which yours appears to be) since, as a poster mentioned above, need based aid is meant for students who need that money rather than for students whose parents want to test them.

One option you can consider apart from scholarships and merit aid is a student loan or a parent loan (although getting a loan is nowhere near as good as having your parents pay directly).

By financial Aid i did mean scholarships and such, not just need based. I should get merit aid from most of the private schools i am applying, but most of the public deadlines for scholarshiip have passed
