I live out of state, and my parents have told me that I cannot go to W&M because out of state tution and costs are very expensive. That is, unless I get some good financial aid. My family is middle class, so that gives you an idea as to how much money we make. My question is this. Excluding loans, how much does the College usually award in aid packages? If all they could offer is loans, then I will not be able to attend because I do not want to borrow that much money. Also, I can tell you I won't be getting any merit based scholarships considering how smart the people that get those there are.

well, im OOS and my efc is 22000. i got a 12000 grant, a 1500 work study, and 8000 in loans. that 22000 is 25% of our income, so i will not be attending in the fall

Thanks for the reply…I plan on filling out the FAFSA4CASTER sometime soon, and I will post my efc. Basically you got aid about equal to your efc, including 8000 in loans per year…and I have two younger siblings that will soon also be going to college, so I will probably end up going elsewhere. Either way, I’ll just see what happens.

yeah, im not complaining, but im just a hair disappointed. i knew it was coming, i just didnt want it to

But isn’t the yearly Cost of Attendance $22,000? If your EFC was also $22,000, why would you get ANY financial aid? Or is the EFC for all 4 years total?

im out of state. its 42000 comprehensive cost.

I was mildly surprised that DS’s James Monroe scholarship stipend was the only money he was offered (other than a small Stafford Loan). He is honored by the James Monroe, but was kind of hoping for something to mitigate the pain of OOS tuition.

^^^^^^"that 22000 is 25% of our income, so i will not be attending in the fall "

Yea, the “EFC” is a total joke, … mine is $40K+, almost half our income, … this stuff was thought up by some Hannibal Lecter type … State is looking like a REAL possibility, … <sigh></sigh>

Sorry, Tarheel - of course you’re out of state, with that screen name. And I’m sorry that the cost is 42,000 OOS. Wow.

Sorry to hear that Tarheel, we’ve been there. My EFC was staggering, similar to plumazul’s, between a third and a half of our income. I never realized that “Open-market value of internal organs” was included as an asset for calculating the EFC …

So, it was “goodbye, prestigous private LACS, hello state school” for us. We were very fortunate that “state schools” included W&M and UVA, so, while it felt bad to be so forcibly limited by financial considerations, it wasn’t a terrible blow.

I remember Williams promising “if you can get in here, we’ll make sure you can afford it” - a lie. Unless you consider graduating with > $100K in debt “affordable.”
