Financial Aid

Does UT always offer loans in the financial aid package? Is there a way to have a package of only grants?

I’m wondering the same thing too. I have an EFC of 0 yet they still want me to take out about $5,000 in loans. -_-

O gosh that is crazy. Is that per semester or total?
But I’m pretty upset about the loan situation my self.

did they give you guys the Texas Grant?

No how do you get that?

DS got the Texas grant. Not sure why/how.

Mine was all loans except for top 10% scholarship and tuition grant.

When did you financial aid information come out? Mine still says, “Your financial aid award information is not yet available”.

DS got an e-mail yesterday.

Yeah I got my email yesterday.

I was saddled with loans for over $7,000 per semester and my EFC is just over 1000. It seems pretty ridiculous to me to have to pay THAT much for a state school even after grants and little amounts of scholarships.

UT is a state school and can only offer limited financial aid. If you are a freshman with a 0 EFC for 1011, you can expect the following grants:

$5550 Pell Grant (prorated for students with EFC < 4617)
$6780 TEXAS Grant (offered to students with EFC < 4000 who graduated under the recommended or distinguished program in Texas)
$2000 Top 10% (if you were in the top 10% of a Texas public school and submitted FAFSA by March 1)
$750 ACG Grant ($1300 2nd year- Pell eligible and graduated under “rigorous” program)

There are other grants, but funds are limited, so not everyone who qualifies will receive them.
If you have a 0 EFC, your classes will be covered -housing will be the issue. That’s why loans are offered.

Students with EFC over 4617, but less than 20,000 have it much tougher. They don’t qualify for most grants, but really can’t pay out-of -pocket, so get all loans.

If you have an EFC of 0 you should be provided with as many grants as possible if you submitted your FAFSA on time. I would contact the OSFS at UT but just try to be as nice as possible because there not known for helping you out and they may screw you over.

im not sure how i would have afforded UT if i hadnt got CAPd, UT should offer full tuition for people with EFCs below 2500 or something , similar to whaT uT Arlington and U of houston have

and google texas grant if your in texas your probably eligible

I didn’t get the Texas Grant either, why? The College for All Texans just says to fill out the FAFSA and that’s it. What’s the deal?

@nunya was your efc below 4k? and when did you do the fafsa? are you in texas? what is your graduation plan?

Nice (!) lady at Fin Aid says they started with those having an EFC of 0 and worked up until they ran out of Texas Grant dollars at around 2000-something EFC.

They also ran out of Work Study dollars.

I was just about to say that Nunya!
that is a really good grant too dang i wish they had more money…

yea that what i was thinking, guess your going to have to take out some loans

or either way your other options

On your fin aid CASH page, if you click to accept the loans is that a done deal? If we get scholarships between now and August, will we be locked into the loans or can we decline them before the semester starts?
