Financial Aid?

File an appeal. Ive heard of people whose awards have substantially increased by making one

could someone elaborate on the process of filing an appeal?

[Appeal an Aid Decision: Undergraduate Financial Aid: Northwestern University](http://ug-finaid.northwestern.edu/tasks/prospective/appeal_aid.html)

anyone know how a Pledge Scholarship works?

Lol duke is giving me 26k more than northwestern. Oh well, bye NU.

they met my EFC exactly.

1500 in perkins loan
3500 in subbed loan
2300 in work study
rest in a scholarship

LOLOL. Wow. My expected contribution is apparently 12.6k??? My EFC was 5k and I don’t even think my parents could manage that.

… I don’t even know what to say, except that it looks like I’m not going to have much of a choice in which school I attend.

My EFC was like 3k and they expect me to pay 31k. What a joke, lol.

NU Financial Aid FTW!
Just got amazing grants with no loans, and the work study jobs actually seem interesting.
 I love you, Northwestern.

Greengrass: I think the pledge scholarship simply covers the rest of the tuition/boarding costs that weren’t covered by the university grants.
also congrats on your awesome package! I had an efc of 0 and I got less than you… What was the Fed Academic Competitive Grant?

Remember when looking at your FA packages. Most times when someones EFC is say $5000. That is what the Fafsa thinks your family can come up with out of pocket. Then most times (depending on numerous factors) a student will be offered Perkins and Stafford Loans and work study. The Perkins/Stafford/Work Study is almost always in addition to your EFC.

So someone with an EFC of $5000 most likely their package will be

EFC $5000 (about)
Stafford Loan $3500
Perkins Loan $2000 + (depends on numerous factors)
Work Study 2200 +
NU Scholarship

When will I get an updated FA package after an appeal?

uhh so i got like $44,000 in loans and no scholarship/grants/work study. great.

oh no…
is it because your efc is super high…
appeal!

medio:

exact same thing for me too. i got 100% loans because of my EFC. it’s so frustrating because they expect my parents to dump all extra income into my college funding… they want to do other things besides that obviously

^ People who got 100% loans, what was your EFC??

I got my package, and it looked good, until I saw that they expect us to contribute 10k, when our EFC is less than 6k based on what the FAFSA told us. Do they not use the number from the FAFSA? They said they’d cover 100% of need, and this isn’t 100% of our need. Can I appeal or something, or is this all that they’re giving?

My FAFSA and CSS profile have been received but IDOC is showing not submitted. Does this mean I’ve been “cut out of the loop” so-to-speak and won’t be eligible for anything?

All you can do is compare your FA packages to other colleges that you were accepted to and then make a decision. If in the end, NU is still too expensive then choose another school that may be more of a fnancial match for you.

And remember, NU and most schools like NU use the CSS as well when figuring your EFC. Sometimes the CSS EFC is higher than the Fafsa EFC and then the CSS EFC is what they will use.

Mine’s not showing up yet… does that mean they’re missing paperwork?
