Financial Aid

I know Texas Tech is a public school so I shouldnt expect too much, but how is the financial aid. Not being in the top 10% (im in top 13-14%)of my class is going to hurt my chances of getting Merit Based Aid mentioned on the TTU website.....so Im hoping I could get Need based Aid so I could attend the school..... does any one have an knowledge of how the schools financial aid is like?

Unfortunately, I'm not a good source for this question on financial aid.

Red Raiders,

If you have any experience with financial aid at Tech, please put in your two cents. Thanks.

they have an automatic scholarship scale for SAT scores and it starts at like a 1250 I don't know if you fall into that but it is something

the scale you are taking about is merit aid and it starts from 1200 on SAT but im not in top 10% so that doesnt count for me.....sadly.... so im hoping i can get need based scholorships/aid.....idk....

I had difficulties with the financial aid department. Bunch of idiots. They try to shove lots of loans. A recent study showed Tech only gives 59% of the students aid. This is actually quite low for a school of its stature. I guess they need more money for the athletic department.

Actually, I know many people that received merit aid that didn't score above 1200. They got about $500 year. Need based depends on your financial situation. Pell grant gives up to $4400/year and TPEG varies. You could also qualify for supplemental grant if Pell isn't enough.

many schools push loans, and the process can be arcane--like so many areas persist and find someone to help you through the maze.

Likewise I think Tech is a good value-- while you can get advice here; call the departments and groups etc and see what you can find with some accurate info.

thanks for the info

Have fun watching Bob Knight and those Red Devils playing round ball!!!

red devils?? round ball?

hey I am currently a student looking to transfer out of tech. If you let me know your major, I can let you know a little about how people view the department.

lookinf4aschool..... im thinking about a business major (not sure what exactly).....

The business program is really dependent on what you put into it. If you want to do nothing and party all the time, you can easily get by in the business school. But, if you are a serious student there are some good opportunities. I am transfering becasue I do not find the economics department to be strong enough and it doesnt have classes in public economics, But I have heard that the finance program is pretty cool.
Anyway, tech financial aid is very bad. SImply using the math, the school only costs about 13000 a year and that includes room and board. You are expected to contribute 2500 (I think) in loans your freshamn year. So if your parents estimated financial contribution is near or a little it above 9000 dollars, (to put this in perspective my efc is 17000 and my parents only make 61,000 a year) dont expect any gift aid. However, if you still choose tech, the business college has academic scholarships available for returning students. I think they are about 1000 for a year.
Bottom line, if you really want to go here, do it. But remember that there are stronger business programs at other colleges that will cost you just as much. The only reason I am here is because I still live at home until I transfer. So apply other places, I bet you will find it is only marginally cheaper to got to tech than to got to UT, A&M or some other schools with better business programs.
I hope that helps some. If you want more info call the fin aid office, although they are not too pleasant.

To what school are you transfering to if you dont mind me asking.

I am applying to transfer in the spring to claremont mckenna, cornell, University of Virginia, and Rice.
I really hope I get in.

Time for the monthly boost through the application season.

Time for the monthly boost.

Time for the monthly boost until the end of the application season

Time for the monthly bump until the end of the application season.

Monthly bump time

Just remember that although the publics dont offer much in financial aid, they are still by far less costly than any private who try to wow you with numbers but don't ever speak about the overall cost of attendance. You still pay more at the privates. Tech has two forms of FA, a general scholarship where you can apply at the Texas Common Application site (same one as admissions). They consider you for general scholarships and then forward it on to your college of interest and dept at the university so you may be considered for scholarships through them as well. There is the merit based scholarships if you are in the top 10% as well. You are not limited on how much scholarhip money you recieve so the more you qualify for the better. We only had to take out a small loan to make up the difference.
