GW Financial Aid for New Undergraduates

go to gwu.edu, click on admissions, under undergraduate, click financial aid, on the left bar click ED 1 under how to apply. good luck!

Since you are applying for financial aid like me, do yu have any thoughts about the amount of debt you will have when you graduate? I'm getting a lot of arguments from my family because I want to get into IR and many jobs don't pay that well - and personal fulfillment doesn't pay the rent. Does GW offer some financial aid that will appease parents?

waveswatcher,

honestly, if I am even accepted into GW, i have no idea what kind of financial aid they will give me. Either way, with the tuition/room and board per year 50,000, i feel as if it will be far from enough to help my parents pay for college. I dont know what kinda of aid or how much of it gwu usually tends to give. In my own estimates, i predict a debt of 125,000 if i graduate from GWU. My family wants to support my decision no matter what and will try to work trhough it but i know this is wayyy too much debt to have as a young adult. Its even harder decision when i have already received full scholarships to temple and Pitt....so idk what i am going to if i get accepted ED considering it is binding

wow you guys are way braver than I am....haha I love GW but I don't think I can take the risk of doing ED...i have this horrible scenario where I'll get in ED and get no financial aid and have to find a way to get 200 grand...since you guys are doing ED do you know if they definitely are going to give you aid? i know i can still apply for EDII but i'm hesitant because my family has enough income to be above all the minimums, but not enough to be able to pay for it outright....any insights would be helpful

I have been offered a full ride to another school near NYC but it is not what I really want. I knew exactly where I wanted to be and what I wanted to be for so long that now that money has become an issue, I can hardly believe my dream may go down the tubes. My Dad (who graduated from a state college) is against the huge debt and thinks I'm crazy for being on the fence about GW. But I keep hoping that the job GW helps me get in the future will help pay those huge school loans. I could be wrong and end up eating cat food on a steam grate, paying GW for years!!! Ha!

I've done some research that might help some people out financially. GW's tuition and r/b is about $50K. The average package from GW is about $26K (see their recent letter that you should have gotten in the mail), which brings you down to $24K in debt. If you can come up with $10k/year from your own finances, then you would need to take out loans, etc for about $14K/year. If you look at loan payment charts at 7% interest, your payment for ten years after you get out would be less than $500/month. Still not pretty, but not as painful as the whole ticket. Then you pray that you get a job in DC that pays for the loan and allows you eat more than cat food!

^^the trouble with averags is well, they are averages. GW offers great merit aid to the top of its acceptance pool, and plenty of loans to the bottom half. You should not apply ED if finances are an issue.

Pat: no bank will lend YOU $125k; your parents would have to take out those loans.

yea i know that

I applied EA to GU which is almost as bad as GW. Pat, would you willing to go into debt for GU more than GW, if GU interested you at all?

Through a combination of merit aid and need-based financial aid a student can have their full financial need met by GW. In addition, GW has vowed to put even more resources into providing aid for its students in this rough financial environment. That said, I would apply RD to GW if I was this nervous about the financial uncertainties.

I also checked GW's average financial aid package since the numbers mentioned above didn't sound right. The average financial aid package at GW last year was $37,780. Waveswatcher, perhaps you were looking at the figures for purely need-based aid. GW's average financial aid package is actually larger than GU's $29,000 average aid package. This difference arises because GW gives merit aid and GU does not.

Let's look at the hard numbers of last year's class:

Number of students who applied for need-based financial aid: 1028

Number of students who were determined to have financial need 774

Number of studentswho were awarded any financial aid 730; thus 34 students who had need recieved zero finaid

Number of students who were awarded any need-based scholarship or grant aid 706; thus, 34 received zero finaid and 24 others received 100% loans, i.e., no grants

Number of students whose need was fully met (exclude PLUS loans, unsubsidized loans, and private alternative loans) 498; thus, 32% of kids who had financial need received a package that required private loans

http://www.gwu.edu/~ire/faid.htm

Yes, the 706 who received aid had 92% of their need met and the average package was $35,311(estimated) on U.S. news premium edition it gave the figure as $37,780. All these numbers are past history of course. According to statements made by GW its aid policy for next year will provide more financial aid than in past years.

Thanks for all this info! It really helps. Have a great Thanksgiving.
