Financial Assistance for Int'l Students

Hello guys,
I just got admitted in to the Cockrell school of engineering (ChemE). However, i'm just 0 mile into getting into UT because the int'l student tuition& fees is too much. I'll like to know if you have any ideas about if UT offers scholarship or any financial assistance to new students ( I didn't apply for any since there were restrictions for int'l students.)
Also, if you are or know any int'l students at UT, do you have any idea how they afford the $ 50,000 tuition, room& board?
I'll really appreciate your replies. Thanks in advance.

Most intl students who UT accepts are full-pay, which means that UT expects them to be able to pay the full COA. Unfortunately, UT is a public school, which means that it has no real responsibility to help you pay for a UT education, hence the very, very limited scholarship money. Most int’l students’ parents can afford it, as crazy as that is.

Wow! thanks@ purpleacorn for the prompt reply. I guess i will have to wait for A&M then…
I will try calling UT tomorrow to hear what they have to say

If you are transferring from Montgomery College,MD, did not graduate from a Texas high school and not a Texas resident, you are not going to get any finaid both from UT and A&M.

International students who graduated from Texas high schools and are considered Texas residents pay regular instate tuition. If they cannot afford it, they can apply for TASFA instead of FAFSA, live at home and commute.

Hey Sandykeen…i have the same problem…got acccepted to UT AUSTIN for CS bt as they dont offer any scholarship… i would have no way to pay all that money on money own…but UT AUSTIN was my 2nd choice as i already knw that they would not offer any schoalrs hip …GOT accepted to A&M FOR ME …and they do offer scholarship but still waitin on them…:frowning: …well even if they dont offer me any scholarship ima gonna go for CADET CORE …dat way i pay around 8 k (including housing) insted of 13k+housing…
well what about your back up college…u really should have one right ?

Are you sure the Cadet Core recruits international students?
I believe you have to be a US citizen or green card holder to join.

@yaya …no u dont have to be an us citizen or green card holder to join cadet core…I have done everything i need till today…been taking to recruiter and all…and i know a lot of international students…so the answer is no u dont have to be us citizen…and i ll most probably join CORE so dat i can get instaate tuition…
are u going to a&m too ?

immanjil

No, I am a parent. My daughter is at UT.

But I am a foreign born, naturalized US citizen, that’s why I am very surprised to hear about international students (on visa, I presume) joining any kind of military body. Are you absolutely sure you don’t have to be a green card holder?

Also, what kind of special scholarships for undergraduate students are available at A&M?

I know 3 types that you can get at any Texas public university, but they all have certain restrictions and limitations.
[College For All Texans: Good Neighbor Scholarship Program](College For All Texans: Good Neighbor Program (Students from Other Nations of the American/Western Hemisphere))

For the core of cadets , i m 100 per sure ,…i have been talking to recruiter for a while now … We get to decide on our orientation day … And i have talked wid other students from my country (nepal) who are a part of core cadet… Any way core of cadet is schhool program and i dont think they have restrictions for international …
So if we join we get a chance to get scholarships ment for cadets…
And a&m has AFGIE TRANSFER SCHOLARSHIP…which is also available for. International students … But At UT they dont even let us file any applocation for scholarship …

@ YaYa thanks for your reply, do you know whether you can be allowed to pay instate tuition provided your sponsor is a texas resident? Also i applied for a couple of scholarships at A&M, hopefully it helps me pay for the tuition.
@immanjil My back up is A&M, i got in and i applied for their transfer scholarship too, so i’m counting on that. Do you know if corps of cadet affects your academic performance and if girls usually join? I am probably going to call them and see if it can be a source of financial aid if the worst comes to the worst.

Thanks for your responses.

welll we seem to be in same position …i am counting on the AGGIE TRANSFER SCHOLARSHIP TOO…and i have been keeping up with the scholarship department…they said they would distribute it in may…and today a lady at the office said it should come up after 15th of may…i m really hoping for it…else i will have to go to core cadet…
and i dont think CORE CADET will affect your studies but it will enhance it…they give first priority to studies only then you are asked to participate in other cadet works or things…
but i dont think we are gonna have much of outside life after we join…

So where u currently studing at? and did u get into a&m for Chemical too ?

Sandykeen

I don’t know that much about A&M. I have been there, of course, and I have seen girls-cadets, so yes, girls join.

You need to ask your questions at A&M forum.

From what I saw on A&M website

Aggie transfer scholarship is not that big $ 500-3000 annually, it will not help you much if you have to pay $ 50000 as OOS

non-resident tuition waiver is Texas finaid and is available at every Texas public college, but the number of waivers is VERY LIMITED. Don’t count on it too much
[College For All Texans: Competitive Scholarship Waiver](College For All Texans: Competitive Scholarship Waiver)

If you join Corps you probably have better luck, their website says that “most Corps scholarships qualify non-Texas residents for a non-resident tuition waiver”

Good luck!
