Financial Award Letter released... Mostly loans!

I got mine today via email notification. My EFC is 0. But, guess what? Loans. =/

Here's all my rewards/loans: http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/1249/captureedw.png
~$11,488 in rewards. The rest ($34,464) are all loans.

Arggh... I probably can't attend Illinois now.

Looks like your biggest loan is the Parent Plus, it appears your also OOS. I know many schools are starting to release financial aid awards just always curious of the order. Were you admitted ER or RD?

I need to create a netID, but I don’t know where to get my University Identification Number (UIN) from. I haven’t received anything in the mail about admission except for the James Scholars–is there a way to get my netID other than my application packet?

Directly from their website. You may need to contact the school.

@Coolbreeze. I applied regular decision and yes, I am out-of-state.

Terrible financial aid. 31 IN STATE COA!. 31000-Efc of 18000=13000 in need. U of I gave me 5000 in loans, no work study, leaking a gap of 8000 extra that my parents need to take. So they actually need to pay 26000! Terrible aid.

oh my gosh, this is horrible, they give you less than 3000$ in merit aid. I am really sorry dude  I hope something else comes up for you. You can always politely ask for more. After all with that financial package I dont think you have much to lose :/

Same here. Only 5.5K in Federal Sub/Unsub loans. In state. EFC mid 20s. But…I called and the merit awards are not out yet. Admissions is saying early April, and the Coll of Engineering awards have not been awarded either, per the College. Not sure about the other colleges. So, the award letter will be modified, if and when Financial Aid office is notified of any. I should say not all the merit awards are out yet, since I’m not sure if the big ones have been awarded yet or not.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Did you actually call both the fin. aid office and college of engineering?

My son got the same package as you. It is a bit disheartening to think that you work so hard to get the best grades you can, get a 35 on your ACT, and then they give you NOTHING!!!

Sorry, just venting, but I do hope you are right!

Yep, called both offices. College Confidential is nice, but, if you want the unvarnished truth, you have to ask the source.

I need help deciphering my letter… when you click on “Award Letter” and scroll to the bottom there are 4 buttons:
“Accept/Decline Awards”
“Request Changes”
“not attending”
“print/save award letter”

Couple of questions…
– What am I supposed to do? am I supposed to click on one of these?
– do you think more scholarship decisions will be released?
– besides the scholarship database… is there a way to narrow the UIUC scholarship search just to see potential scholarship possibilities that I may be awarded? (I’m just curious :-] )

btw in response to other ppls posts. I’m expected to pay FULL TUITION (-$1000 Rogers, Robert W. Scholarship) so I’m in the same boat as most of you guys :-/

Part of the reason for the UIUC financial crunch is cuz the gov’t is in deep money managing poop. Bankruptcy… why did I have to live in IL i should have moved to Cali… haha

When I called FinAid, I was just asking about whether all the awards that I’d get were listed. But, I have to say that I was puzzled as to the ramifications of accepting or not. But in my case, since they’re only offering loans so far, I’m in no hurry to accept anything yet.

Your best bet is to call financial aid and ask them about the accept/decline thing, but since you’ve got until May 1st, I figure, what’s the rush. Wait and see if something changes.

There is also a possibility of a 3-year degree program:

Can you request such things as the Federal Work Study, or is this something only awarded to those with substantial need?

I got $14,000 in Illinois scholarships and the rest is all loans.

^ You can request it. Try hitting “Request Changes” and state that you want it.

Does anyone remember if the EFC is calculated by FAFSA or entered by user?

My EFC is 99999 and I don’t know if my dad put that in or it was calculated from his income.

How do “cut off” 18 year olds with high income parents receive financial aid?

also for some reason I can’t log onto my own FAFSA so I can’t check the above ^

Its calculated by FAFSA.

Was there any way to declare financial independence on the FAFSA? Sorry with all the questions, my password really doesn’t work…

out of state
EFC: 33xxx
got federal subsidized and unsubsidized loans, and parent plus loan

all loans… OH - IO!
