Hello I was wondering a couple of things about the financial aid process. My financial report has me getting the CAL GRANT A, however, I am skeptical I will because I fall in competitive C1 and have never gotten it. My status also has UCSC giving me a $6000 grant. I know that if I dont get the CAL GRANT, then I still would get the blue and gold opportunity plan. But I am wondering if I get the B&G, will UCSC take back the $6000 grant, because I dont see them giving out $18,000. From what I am awar CAL GRANT is by the state of CA, so UCSC wouldnt mind giving $6,000. But the B&G is given by the UC's, so would UCSC also give me the B&G and the $6,000? It's kinda important because whether or not I get that $6,000 determines whether I go to school there or not.

Heres what my package looks like:

Conditional Cal Grant A

Grant

12,924.00

Conditional Pell Grant

Grant

5,550.00

Conditional UCSC Grant

Grant

6,049.00

Conditional Direct Loan

Loan

5,500.00

Federal Direct Unsubsidized Ln

Loan

1,700.00

Conditional Work-Study Option

Work/Study

2,300.00

Aid Year Totals

34,023.00

I know I get a good financial aid package but still that $6,000 I need to go to school here.

From what I understand, if you qualify for both B&G and Cal Grant, you either get one or the other. They are essentially the same type of grant paying tuition and fees. As for the $6000 grant, it sounds like a UCSC only grant that would be awarded to you regardless of whatever your B&G/Calgrant would be. Why not just call up to the financial aid office and ask them? They would certainly be a bit more helpful than any of us here on CC could be. I’ll admit, I’m no expert on Financial Aid.

I did end up calling today and they said that the conditional grants should be the same when i actually sign the SIR, meaning that whatever they estimate in grants should be the same no matter what. However im still a little skeptical. I mean SC is pretty expensive, but is cheaper with the grant. Without that grant id have to SIR to UCSD (where I live) or something

Why are you so certain that you wouldn’t receive the $6K grant? Its not a government grant, its from the school, right? In any case, going to UCSD is not a terrible option either, especially if you’re planning on living at home if that is in your local area. Would you rather attend UCSC?

Well if I got the cal grant thats the state giving me the 13k for tuition. And then UCSC would give me 6k grant. But, if I dont get the cal grant, then the b&g would cover my 13k tuition, but SC would be giving me that. I worried that they wouldnt also give me the 6k grant, if that makes any sense lol i know im being confusing. Like is UCSC only willing to give the 6k if they dont have to pay the tuition fee.

Oh and to your second part yeah UCSD is pretty dreadful. Like, believe it or not the Asians there discriminate, or keep to themselves, and its very segregated. Also that school cheats and I just got a bad vibe. UCSC is more me, not so much the hippie theme but the laid back democratic theme.

UCSC is awesome; they’re more than covering my financial needs. I don’t need to contribute anything extra, but with UCD, I will (about $3000 or so on top of the grants, loans, and scholarships that were included in their package, which isn’t HORRIBLE, but). If I get into Berkeley, I hope their financial-aid package is better than Davis’.

Even if they dont give you a SUPER good package, I def say go to CAL if you get in buddy. CAL would be awesome, college town, football team, I mean thats awesome. Although education for undergrads are pretty much the same across the UC’s, CAL would be an awesome place to go to school. The college rankings (i.e US news world report) typically rank based on their grad programs. But on the other hand undergrads are being taught by the same professors, so IDK. All I know is that im a soc major and CAL Berkley has the best soc program in the world, its ranked number 1!

@Dremaniac- Ahhh. Well, usually schools are pretty good about giving estimated school-only grants, or at least, thats my experience with an OOS university. But yeah, UCSC is AWESOME. I’m still waiting on my acceptance, but I definitely plan on SIR’ing- The school is a perfect fit for me! :)
