I am currently on a long internship in a financial institution. I've been assigned to their investment management division developers team. I am completely unfamiliar with the investment world so during meetings all the financial terms to over my head. If anyone currently works in that type of environment or knows it that environment can point me towards a good book geared towards a general knowledge of investment management terms etc.

Have you asked anyone at the financial institution for a book recommendation? If you show an interest in the business of the company you may find some people who are interested in mentoring you and trying to make sure you stay interested for a permanent position at the company.

This randomly came to me Friday night after leaving. I was going to make sure I did so tomorrow for any recommendations. But I wanted to provide at least 1 or 2 books to them to show them I have looked on my own. I was going to try one of the for dummies books but I’m slightly iffy on them.

Don’t worry about that. Just ask. Nobody’s going to expect you to know about Investment Management. I’ve worked at Investment Banks and Management companies in New York and San Francisco, and believe me, the guys who work in these types of places love to give advice on anything.

Investment Management is specialized enough so that it’s hard to to recommend a book without knowing exactly what kinds of investments your department deals with. A basic finance book followed by a portfolio management book would be where I’d start, but your colleagues may have recommendations that are more specifically applicable to the types of investments your department deals with.
