Anyone know which universities offer Financial Engineering major? Thanks.

Well, I’d never heard of it, but when I GOOGLED it, several u’s came up. Looks like many of them are grad schools. I suggest you check it out.

Apparently available at MIT, Princeton (reaches) and SUNY Binghamton. Wondering if any other undergraduate programs are available in Financial Engineering.

University of Michigan has a Financial Mathematics undergraduate program. I imagine if you wanted something equivocal to a Financial Engineering major for undergrad, a good solution would be at Michigan, Financial Math + Computer Science dual major.

I researched a little bit, and from what I’ve heard the firms that hire for quant jobs generally want Math and Computer Science PHDs, but take MFE students because those programs are designed exactly for what someone getting a quant job needs. An undergraduate doesn’t have the opportunity to get the mathematical experience necessary for those jobs, and you more or less need a CS or Math degree in undergrad to get an MFE.

By the way, can you provide links to pages of information about the undergrad programs in those schools?

Also, there are forums dedicated to the subject of Financial Engineering. You’re likely to have better luck asking in those forums.

I am sorry I don’t have the links to these majors. I am trying to research this school by school.

Cornell has this program although it is given a different name. Look at the Cornell engineering dept and you will find it.

Columbia also has it.

I think Rice University has a financial engineering major.

VCU has one if you are looking a little lower tier

Interesting, my son would have been interested in that major - he had a difficult time choosing Econ or Engineering…he chose engineering.

Financial Engineering is also an application area within Industrial Engineering (as is Manufacturing Systems, Supply Chain Management, Transportation and Logistics, etc.). Anyone interested in Econ and engineering may want to look into industrial engineering. (though not “all” industrial engineering programs support this application…)

Financial Engineering
· How can the risk of an investment be reduced
· How can we build a robust investment portfolio
· What price and length should a service or warranty contract be
· Which capital projects should be funded (capacity expansion, equipment replacement)

Also look for quantitative finance major (or QF option under finance), or operations research major (or OR option under math). They’re both very similar to FE.
