Financial Mathematics

I have a few questions regarding UMich's Actuarial/financial mathematics program:
1) Are the student really competitive?
2) Is it a popular major?
3) What kind of jobs do grads get?

Thanks for helping!

Anyone know anything about the program?

Well it's mainly for becoming an actuary as it implies. Calculating risk for an insurance company is an example. But with the quantitative skills you get from it, I would guess that you can get a job in any financial institution, assuming you do well. You'll need a lot of math/probability background. I also think stats courses are part of the program.

I doubt it's a popular major. Most people who major in math do so for its theoretical side.

You might want to go to the B school instead. In some cases it's better. But if you want a more math intensive field, the actuarial program would fit the bill. The B school is not nearly as quantitative as an actual math major. B school students don't really go for financial jobs that require that much math.
