Financial Packages

Does anyone know when we might hear? Specifically Fredonia and Potsdam? Has anyone heard yet?

Hi Momof3Stars: Did you hear anything about $ from Fredonia/Crane yet? DD, as you know, had the full tuition from Oswego, and got a whopping $1000.00 (500/semester) merit scholarship from Fredonia-guess there's quite a variety among state schools. I don't think the average admission stats for those 2 schools are very different. Still waiting on thumbs up or down from Music Dept. though!

Hi, MusMOM!!! We did hear from Fredonia just this last week. D got a Presidential Scholarship ($3000 yr) which we heard about on Wed or so and the rest of her package came on Sat. :D !!! Looks like Fredonia is our new frontrunner, she wants to do the overnight hopefully in April but is still wi****lly hoping a miracle will happen with Ithaca I think. Personally I think she will have better opportunities at Fredonia both musically and socially. People will totally dispute this but it is all dependent on the kid I think.

I hear you on the music acceptance though, we are waiting on academic from NYU and everything from Eastman.

We have heard nothing from Potsdam on $$$ though I have read that they have guaranteed merit money dependent on SAT's and GPA. It is strange how SUNY's vary as far as scholarship money. I wish they had D's major at Oswego, that is a fabulous scholarship and I have a cousin out there who would probably love and on-call sitter!!!

Good for her- that's a really nice amount. SHe must have really great grades etc. in addition to being so talented! As I recall, when son got the Pres. Scholarship from Oswego, Potsdam offered him $1,000 merit! Oswego's investments must be doing better, or alumni contribute more!

I found the info on the Potsdam scholarships on this page:
http://www.guaranteed-*****************/?bcsi_scan_23DD8F59FEE25380=0

It could be incorrect though but if it is correct my D would qualify for a little over $4000 year there. That would probably not be enough to sway her though.

I have to say I don't understand a lot of this SUNY money thing though. I can see that Fredonia has put TONS of money into bettering the appearance of the campus, obviously sports are a big draw there as well. I have never seen Oswego's campus so IDK. It is possible though that alumni $$ is plentiful.

I heard from a friend today that Potsdam told her they are sending out packages this week. I would assume also that anyone that is still waiting on a decision would hear about that as well.

We just received notice of our Potsdam Mt.Emmons/Freshman Scholarship. D got a $3100 Freshman Scholarship. They only told about that one though, they didn't send a whole package. Of course we are still waiting on the acceptance letter from Crane anyhow!

We got our Potsdam letter as well and my D got a $2100 Freshman scholarship (which was significantly less than the scholarship from Fredonia) and was told she is not a finalist for the Mt Eammons. Oddly enough she said "Is it ok that I am happy about that?". LOL, Potsdam was not really in the running for us but if she had received the Mt Eammons we would have had to reconsider that obviously. So she will, in a few days, be sending a letter to Potsdam declining.

DLBarber: That's great though about your D!! I know she is interested in Potsdam so that is a good scholarship.

Do Fredonia and Crane also give music scholarship money to Freshman? I looked back at our Fredonia package. They didnot include the Dean's money (1000) in the final package. They also had a lot of loan money and workstudy money included. I don't consider work study to be aid, as the child has to actually secure a job (sometimes not available at the times the child is available). I consider it extra spending money!

Fredonia did not include the Presidential Scholarship in our package either but I assume that is just a clerical error. I have been meaning to call. My D had no work study included which was ok with us as I don't necessarily consider that aid too and the maximum of subsidized loans (which she can knock out a lot of with some of the outside scholarships she has won).

I was also wondering about music scholarships at Crane. Fredonia has a lot listed but for the most part they are for voice, piano, or for upperclassmen. I am sure my D qualifies for something there (probably need to get on the horn to Fredonia on these things).

What I think is totally interesting is that your D received $3100 in academic money at Potsdam, my D $2100 and at Fredonia my D received $3000 in academic and yours $1000? Shouldn't it be a little more consistent?

OK, I just called Fredonia and the FA office said the reason that my D's Presidential Scholarship was not on the original FA letter was due to the fact that they got the info late from Admissions. She said we will be recieving a revised letter soon.

Also, asked the question of outside scholarships and what they would exactly apply to. She said that they would first go to reducing the EFC and government loans and would not take away from any other aid given until that was exhausted.

I also noticed the difference in Merit $ between the 2 schools! I was thinking the same thing, that if they go on grades, etc. it should be more consistent. The only thing I can figure is that for the Freshman $ at Potsdam, they said a FAFSA needed to be on file, so maybe need is taken into account. Just brought the mail in....still no Crane letter! Do you remember what type of envelope the Crane acceptance was in? Of course they had to re-schedule some Feb auditions for 3/15, so maybe they are sitting on the decisions and also the music scholarships until next week!

DlBarber: I just checked w/my D and she said the Crane acceptance came in a regular mailing envelope, standard size.
Our FAFSA was submitted, my D said that she thought the Freshman scholarship was based on the essay submitted as well so it is possible they liked your D's essay more. Whatever the case I feel like it has oddly worked out don't you think? Your D has a big interest in Crane and mine in Fredonia, thank goodness the aid reflected that!!!
