financial safeties in the same vein as chicago?

Emory has a fairly competitive full scholarship program you could take a shot at.

Closer to home, Agnes Scott would be worth a look. Strong academics, gorgeous campus, and very close to Atlanta.

Davidson is reasonably generous with merit $ for a top LAC and is loan-free. Definitely worth consideration.

Rhodes also deserves a good look (beat you to it, lynxinsider!).

You’re correct that Chicago will likely be quite stingy with your financial aid package.

^ Chicago is quirky about aid. They do award about 100 $10K, merit-based University Scholarships and a “handful” of full tuition, merit-based College Honor Scholarships. If memory serves, “handful” meant about 15 back in the day, but that number may have increased along with the size of the entering classes in recent years.

It sounds like you have the grades, the scores, and the “fit” to be a good admissions candidate, but realistically, for a major merit grant you’ll be up against some stiff competition. Give it your best shot but investigate other financing options and other schools.

I would also check-out some of the COPLAC Colleges - Public Liberal Arts Colleges

Some of them are excellent schools and very affordable…St. Mary’s, SUNY Genseo (NY) etc.
