Financial Safety

Looking for schools to visit that may offer merit scholarships or good financial aid packages for my daughter?
Her Stats:
Senior
Taken most challenging courses offered
GPA 3.79/4 unweighted
4.21 weighted
ACT C 34 Sci 36 Math 33 Reading 33 English 35

Interested in Biology (General at this point)

Mother Unemployed
Family income 68,000 this year
family size 4
oldest parent 47
only real asset 80,000 in home equity

She likes University of Chicago, Northwestern and Loyola Chicago but really needs to start looking at some financial safety schools. Any Suggestions?

What is her rank?

Her best bet is probably schools that meet need rather than merit aid schools if mom isn’t going back to work or if they family could still afford the EFC if mom gets a job.

Her school does not rank. I am guessing top 10%.

Typically, safety schools (as well as many match schools) do not offer much financial aid, so for your daughter to apply to financial safeties, she needs to apply to schools that she KNOWS for SURE will give her big assured scholarships.

A lower-ranked school that “may” give her a scholarship would not be a financial safety because it would be unaffordable if she didn’t get the competitive scholarships.

It’s ok to apply to a couple schools with competitive scholarships, but for a school to be a true financial safety for your D, the school would have to have ASSURED BIG scholarships for stats. Obviously, the assured scholarship would have to be quite large. If a school costs - say $30k per year - then a $10k per year scholarship wouldn’t be enough.

To find such schools…

Chcgomom, the first schools that should be on the list are the safety schools. The ones that you know your kids can get admissions there and you can afford it. Once that is covered, your D can apply to her hearts content. They are all lottery tickets, but her ship just might come in.

Look at those schools with guarnateed merit award, along with some low cost local schools that you can afford.
