Today, I got a mail from Indiana saying how much I'm getting. They're giving me the faculty award which gives me 6,000 and then some Loans and totals to about 8,500. That is pretty skimpy...where is the FAFSA? I sent it in and all, but I'm not getting any AID. What should I do? Indiana is my top choice right now, I'd expect a better package.

Public institutions don't have the funds that private institutions have. They are geared towards providing the students in-state who's parents pay taxes for the school to operate. Their first priority is letting in-state students have an affordable education. So they don't have much money for OOS applicants.

If you somehow get money from another school, and that school is cheaper (an OOS public that's of comparable level, etc, Purdue), then send that award in, ask them to match the offer, and see how it goes. If you don't get money from another school, then just write a letter asking for your award to be increased.

I'm afraid that's how it goes at IU. My son's first award consisted solely of loans and work study, and even that fell far short of meeting need. After his acceptance into the music school, he was able to get $4000 a year in grants (from the music school), but it was a tight year this year. Next year, he will be an RA, which gives free room and board, plus $1200 a year, so things will be a bit better. (That is equivalent to about $8000 a year.)

We were disappointed, too, and my son almost crossed IU off his list. However, with the $4000, we decided we could make it, and he is very glad to be going there. Of course, he is in the music school, and it is among the best in the country, so it was worth a bit of sacrifice. Whether it is worth that to you, only you and your parents can decide.

Thanks Susan, after freshman year, if I get into the honors program at Kelley, they provide a substantial amount of scholarships so I don't think it'll be a problem, I was just wondering.

yea same here too heh loans work study and my faculty award. the state aid/grants are only for residents and the university grant that IU has is usually given to financial need students with academic promise regardless of residency but the only problem is.... the university grant expired couple years back :( i inquired about this grant and thats the info. i got. basically, they ran out of grant money to give. oos students only have scholarships, loans and work study goin for em. same here parikhs, if i go to IU, ima apply to the kelley scholarships and some other ones i can get.

anyone get the direct admit kelley scholarships? heard only some of the direct admit students get em.

dcho how sure are u of going to iu next fall? what are u choosing between?

ucla vs. indiana lol yea 95% of people are saying scrwe IU but they dont see IU the way i do :). um its all gona depend on the results of my selective scholarship application which will come out this tuesday or wednesday. the result will make or break me. IU is my 1st choice. just need the money.....

got into ucsd, uci, ucsb and uc davis but eh those schools arent wut im lookin for... got into umiami too but not goin cant afford it and aint one of my top choices.

I was told at the admissions chat to contact the Kelley school about their scholarships and when they are awarded, they didn't know. The site sounded like they were awarded after you committed to IU though.

the direct admit scholarships have already been awarded to students for fall 2006. i asked the bschool scholarship manager about those scholarships and he says all of em were sent out. you're talkin about these scholarships right?

it lists when the awards were last awarded so maybe there is a possibility that some of the awards havent been awarded... or the funds ran out....

note: not everyone gets em even if you are a direct admit.

Gosh, so no more money for me. This isn't good!

well you shud still email the bschool and ask them about some of the remaining scholarships that say they were last awarded in 2005-2006 or before. only some of the awards, about half says they were awarded in 2006-2007 so there could be a slight possibility that some of them weren't sent out yet. u shud never assume things, if you're not sure ALWAYS ask, it never hurts

besides IU is big school and im sure theres alot of red tape or administrators/workers not knowing the correct answer..... i mean sometimes when i email them, they dont correctly answer what im asking rather giving me a regurgitated computer response lol so then i gota keep drilling and asking my question in new ways for them to finally get the hint heh wonder whi they sometimes never answer a question accurately and fully?

Wow, there's a lot of scholarships avaliable once you're in the business school. Maybe i'll get money from them after i'm on campus. :)

There are also university-wide scholarships you can apply for after your freshman year, each with its own criteria. My son put in an application, but we won't hear until July whether or not he got any of them. It doesn't say how much they are worth either, so we'll just have to wait and see. We figured it was worth a shot, anyway.
