While we are delighted and relieved to have learned of our daughter’s acceptance to Miami, we haven’t seen anything from the school that pertains to merit awards or other financial matters. Does this mean that our OOS student won’t be offered anything? Or does that information arrive under separate cover? We aren’t seeing anything, either on the Applicant Status Page, or in the packet containing the congratulatory letter and poster. So many other kids seem to have been already been notified of their awards - we are left to wonder…
It comes under separate cover. We got impatient with waiting (his acceptance letter was about week ago - he applied 12/1) and called the financial aid office. He did get a merit scholarship
Any questions, i would say, email your admissions officer. i emailed ours with a different question, and he got right back to me within a few hours with my answer.
Has anyone heard of successfully ‘negotiating’ a better merit scholarship with Miami. While we are very grateful, we were expecting more. My S had a 1530 out of 1600 SAT (super scored), about a 5.0 weighted GPA, 11 AP courses and goes to one of the highest rated high-school in the country (Boarding school where students apply from across the state. Only 320 are admitted/yr based on merit) . We are out of state and got $19k a year with UASP/Farmers. Makes it a bit out of reach (and I won’t qualify for financial aid)
I hope you will get some good information soon, MintHill15 - we are still awaiting news on the financial aid front. Hope you will let us know if you have any luck with this!
@MintHill15 We are in the same situation. We are grateful, but disappointed. From what I have heard, the students geography came in to play on award amounts. That’s why some kids with lower stats got more merit money. I’m not sure how it worked for in state; some got awards way above tuition that can be used toward room and board. I didn’t think that was possible? We are super bummed as Miami was a top choice for my daughter.
Ok,I guess I am getting more discouraged then - still haven’t heard anything at all on the merit aid front. I’ve heard similar things with respect to the school’s effort to build some regional diversity in terms of OOS applicants.
I will do that on Monday, @MintHill15, thanks! One of the GC’s at our D’s school suggested that if we hadn’t heard anything, it meant nothing would be forthcoming. This puzzles me though, as even schools that had offered her no merit aid, such as our instate flagship, still sent materials regarding financial stuff, including notice of the “opportunity” to apply for a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan. We definitely would like to have more information before we commit to arrangements for a “Make it Miami” session.
So the very nice staff person at Miami reports that notices of financial aid are worked on and issued in “batches,” and the fact that an invited student has not yet received any notice is not indicative of anything, one way or the other. Notices will be issued by no later than mid-March.
Run the school’s Net Price Calculator if you want a quick estimate. Families who earn ~$150k or more probably shouldn’t expect a lot of need based aid from OOS publics, but your student may qualify for merit aid. Unless you’re divorced or own a business the NPC should give you a rough estimate of your net costs.
@MintHill15, Based on speaking with several different people in admissions over the last few weeks, merit aid awards overall have been affected by the strong group of accepted students this year. Awards are smaller, and they are less likely to add anything to offers at this point. The only thing that might affect it is if your ACT/SAT score increased significantly since your original application.
Got the financial package today. $2k UASP/Farmers and $17k Redhawk Eminence OOOS. Going to be a tough decision. Expect he’ll get into UNC Chapel Hill at about $5k less a year (we live in NC)
Yeah, HRSMom. That’s my thought as well. But after his sister and both my wife and myself went there, he feels like he wants to go somewhere else. Also applied to Duke, UVA, CalTech and George Washington (waiting to hear from those). Already accepted to Stetson, Rollins, UNCW and Miami.
