Financing a Master's abroad

Most of the UK schools offer limited funding opportunities - so I am trying to think of ways to fund my education. Obviously, it will have to be through awards and loans.

First, I am pretty ill educated on finance issues. Is it right that you cannot use a US govt loan for education abroad? What other low interest loans are out there that can be used abroad? I currently have a GATE loan through Bank of America - but I highly doubt I can use this same program abroad, as it is a partnership with US Universities...

Also, does anyone have any good scholarships or prizes that can be used towards funding a British education? I am a US student, so obviously I cannot apply for EU funding programs [I wish...].

Thanks!

No. According to one of my Canadian schools, Stafford loans apply to Americans studying abroad. You might have to check with particular schools to see if they participate in the program.

Have you considered studying in countries that charge no tuition fees, or that are heavily subsidised? Oslo, Copenhagen, Uppsala, Lund and Helsinki are but some of the top Scandinavian universities that i don’t think charge much, if anything.

Though, the cost of living is fairly high…

Depending on the UK university, you can complete the FAFSA and apply for Stafford and Grad PLUS loans just like in the US. I am an American student and I was able to apply for loans to UCL without any problems.

Thanks for the help - I am going to look into Stafford loans.

Also: thanks on the scholarship help. I actually applied for many of those this fall. Got an interview, didn’t make it any farther :frowning: sadly enough…
It seems like the Rhodes and Marshall and such = almost impossible for people to get.
I am going to look into the Ambassadorial scholarship though… that might be promising.

Also, I know it is too late to apply for a Fulbright for next school term. But can I apply for it for my last (2nd) year of an MPhil?

Hi,
I too will be going abroad, and financing it will be tough!
I know you can use the GRAD PLUS loan abroad. Also as a graduate student there are many grants that you can apply to once you get there.

What school are you going to? I was offered funding by LSE through their Graduate Support Scheme.

CT: I am accepted at LSE, but I did not get any funding through the Grad Support scheme. It was a bummer. I am hoping some of the “American Friends” of LSE like my essay and give me some money later in the summer.

I am waiting to hear back from Oxford. I doubt I will get any funding there as well, as I applied in section III, not II.

So I am hoping that Stafford and Grad Plus loans will work out… Then, when I get there - do some kind of job. I have been a professional in the equestrian community for years [both as a professional groom and trainer]. I am hoping that maybe I can work part time doing horse things to help offset some costs…but we will see.
