The FAFSA is a financial aid application form. It is free. It is submitted to colleges and included information about your parents and your income and assets. These income and asset amounts are used to determine an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) which actually should be viewed as the MINIMUM you will be expected to pay for college (most schools do not meet your full need which is their cost of attendance minus the EFC). The FAFSA EFC is primarily used to compute eligibility for federally funded need based aid…Pell Grants, Stafford loans, Perkins Loans, work study, and some other grants that some schools award.

The FAFSA becomes available January 1 of your senior year in high school for students enrolling in college that fall. (so for seniors this year, the FAFSA will become available on Jan 1, 2011). You want to file it ASAP. You can file it when it becomes available using estimates (from your last pay stubs) indicating you will file your taxes. Then complete your taxes ASAP after Feb 1 and amend the FAFSA to reflect the 2010 tax return information on the FAFSA, and resubmit.

Colleges award financial aid packages. Each school will award you a package and they very likely will differ. What they include depends on what you qualify for. If you have a VERY low family income, you might see a Pell grant, stafford loan, perkins loan, SEOG, work study and maybe some state grants for low income students. If your income is higher, you might get only a Stafford loan.

No…FAFSA doesn’t “give” money. It is a financial aid application form.

Some schools also require the CSS Profile or a school based financial aid form. You need to check each school for their financial aid application requirements…AND the DEADLINES. DO NOT MISS THE DEADLINES.

The other thing you should do is read some of the threads in the sticky at the top of this financial aid forum. There is a ton of information in there.

i just joined today how do i make another thread?

Go to the top. Hit either your back arrow or go to “financial aid and scholarships”. On the left side, look for a little rectangle button that says “New Thread”…hit that…and there you go.
