any suggestions?

What can your family afford?

Have you calculated your EFC (expected family contribution) on the Collegeboard’s EFC Calculator? Select both “IM” and “FM” for the formulas. Keep hitting “save” so you can refer back to it. You will need your parents 2010 Tax return and your 2010 Tax return and other info about assets, savings accounts, retirement accounts, amount owed on family home & what market value of home is presently. (home equity).

There is no sense in making suggestions of $50,000/year plus schools if your family cannot afford them.

What is the breakdown on your SAT scores?

math is 640
reading is 580

You should definitely take your SAT’s again, as well as the ACT, and try to get your scores up. If you can afford it, get an SAT tutor or take a prep course. At your current scores, the Ivy’s, top LACs and other top East Coast schools (Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, Duke, etc) are probably out of your reach, but many of the other top (public and private) East Coast schools are still do-able.

As you probably know, being from New Jersey and applying to East Coast schools puts you at a disadvantage, so if you can afford the travel, try to be a bit more flexible and look at some of the better schools in the Midwest, South and Western US, as that may help you get into a better school than you can get into on the East Coast. Good luck, Jackuk

What about the other more important question - what can your family afford?

Some to possibly check into are Rutgers, Suny Stony Brook, Suny University Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Penn State, UMass Amherst, UConn, Ursinus ¶, Muhlenberg ¶, Washington & Jefferson ¶, Allegheny ¶ and Juniata ¶. Best of luck!

and money is not really an issue i mean the cheaper the better but it seems like all schools are around 50 k these days anyways

thanks everyone and one more thing I’ve been visiting some schools and leaning more towards the smaller private institutions but i just don’t know whats out there

University of Richmond, William and Mary, James Madison, Loyola (MD), St. Mary’s College (MD), American University as a mid-reach or so

How about a smaller public–TCNJ (The College of New Jersey)? It’s a public liberal arts college. And not all colleges are around $50K these days, and of those that have a $50K+ price tag, some offer merit aid that reduces the price, sometime considerably. You really need to have a serious talk with your parents about what they’re willing to pay and run the FAFSA calculator. If money is really not an issue, that opens up more opportunities, but if it is, better to find out now. There are too many stories on CC of kids who get into their first choice college and then can’t afford it.

thanks everyone your suggestions are helping a lot

[Alfred University : Financial Aid : Undergraduate Freshmen Scholarships](http://www.alfred.edu/finaid/scholarships/) Merit Aid for Freshmen

The COA at Alfred University (NY-est. 1836) is about $38,000/year for C.O.L.A.
With your stats you would probably receive $14,000/year Presidential Award for merit.

Small classes-know your professors, need-based aid, merit aid, 2,300 undergrads, Division III Athletics, shuttles go to Rochester airport at peak break times & buses go to NYC at peak break times. All students may have cars, housing for all 4 years, No Greek Life. AU wants more OOS students, so being from NJ is a plus! Nice small village of Alfred, NY with friendly people & plenty of clubs & activities.

You could apply for the Honors Program:

[Alfred University : Honors Program](http://www.alfred.edu/honors/)

If you want a small private school that doesn’t cost over $50k/year, Alfred University would give you an excellent value & a great education.

You can get into Temple with those scores and GPA. It has Division I sports and cheerleading. My son got a $5000 merit scholarship there with a much worse GPA and just a little better SAT scores.

Also, check out Villanova, Catholic U, and Loyola Baltimore.

university of miami, florida is great for bio/pre-med

Also, Franklin & Marshall is a great liberal arts school which is strong in the sciences and not far from New Jersey. Jackuk

TCNJ, public, but small and very good for pre-med
