Find me a show

I loved Sleepy Hollow at first but it went off the rails for me after a while.

Great idea. I have tried a few suggestions and right now have settled on Eureka. It was a good choice because it’s obscure enough that I hadn’t already tried it. AND The all important tone is there. For me the requirement are 1) Humor but not silly 2) great characters who are essentially good people 3) No ridiculous melodrama. One of the reasons I love shows like Grimm and Vampire Diaries is they have an “outside” problem to be the “problem” in the story…. Monsters…being a vampire. Etc…. They don’t need to have the story center solely on problems IN the relationship caused by nothing other than personal unhappiness….A problem I find in many non-fantasy shows. If that makes sense. Anyway I’d love someone else to list 5 shows they love and 5 they hate and see what people come up with.

One show I recently watched that I really enjoyed was Foyles War. It’s about a policeman and his sidekick during WW2 in England. I found the characters very likable.

Also Call the Midwife, Vera, Doc Martin, Outnumbered, and Shetland.

I liked The Walking Dead for a while. My daughter enjoyed Lucifer.

I can’t think of any shows that I hate except for Silent Witness. The Main character is always weirdly smiling and it annoys me. I don’t like sitcoms much as I’ve gotten older though. Not sure why.

Constantine was one show H (who also loved Grimm) was fascinated with. He also liked Sleepy Hollow until it got too weird for him.

We liked Witcher - or at least it grew on us does have humorous aspects. I know we didn’t give Schitt’s Creek much of a chance, but we both hated it. Love Lucifer (despite some not great acting, it’s a good hearted show that’s just an awful lot of fun. Love The Rookie - it’s got Nathan Fillion as the oldest Rookie in the LAPD. It’s got heart and some fun story lines. It’s old, but have you seen Foyle’s War? We liked Killing Eve despite it’s darkness. Honestly my favorite show that we are watching right now is The West Wing which I missed way back when, but is every bit as relevant today. Nothing has changed. Nothing!

We loved Buffy, Angel, Firefly, White Collar, Sherlock. Hated This is Us, Mad Men, Schitt’s Creek, Arrested Development. Have never been big Doctor Who fans, it’s never seemed like real sci fi.

With respect to Schitt’s Creek, I followed a friends advice and after watching the pilot ( hated it) skipped to season 2 after just one more episode which was much better. It ended up being my favorite sitcom ever. One thing to know. As the show progressed Eugene Levy who is a fan of the silly physical comedy he got famous for gave up more and more control to his son Dan who has a much more subtle and sophisticated comedy style. Dan Levy’s humor is warm and kind. I could always tell an episode that Eugene had more of a hand in and never like them as much.

How far did you get

Good Omens! Good hearted humorous romantic absurdist/fantasy six episode series on Amazon. Lots of overlap with Sherlock and Witcher fans.

I second Ms Maisel.

Do you like costume dramas? Downton Abbey, Bridgerton and Outlander come to mind.

There are so many good ones it’s hard to pick.

All time list maybe
X-files, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Dexter (except the finale lol - worst ever), Shitt’s Creek
Honorable mention to Eureka - can’t believe I forgot about that one

Currently love
Stranger things, Ozark, umbrella academy, the Boyz, I liked the old marvel ones before Disney got it, especially the first two seasons of Jessica Jones.

Hate - harder because we don’t start shows we don’t think we would like or stop them soon
Mad men (realty was too depressing)

walking dead (H&kids were faithful viewers until recently. I can do end of the world for a movie but every week was too depressing)

Wanda vision. I don’t see how everyone liked this. I hated it

Movies are a little easier to hate - natural born killers. Would have walked out of the theater but we were with friends. Kill Bill. Sphere - I was completely lost in that one.

Evil is another one. Psychologist joins priest to investigate unexplained mysteries.

You might like the British show, Truth Seekers on Amazon Prime. It’s about ghost hunters but has a lot of interpersonal stuff and humor. Not too gory or scary.

I agree with Good Omens if you haven’t seen it.
