bco09 - congrats on your fabulous Math score!! D is taking SAT 2nd time on Sat. She got a 680 on the Jan SAT. She is weak on the hard Algebra problems, - any last minute tips?

Also - it looks like the Jan Math scores are basically +10 points from the mid-point of the scaled score ranges shown in the BB, is this typical? will the March test be similar, do scaled scores ever fall below the mid-point?

Math-670-5 wrong 3 omitted
Writing-670-10 wrong 11 essay

To be honest, 680 isn’t all that bad (i got 670 in my weak spot, writing), but if she can improve then great! I think that if she is aiming above 700 she probably shouldnt omit any questions, especially in math where the curve is so harsh and leaving out a problem almost guarantees you cant get an 800.

As for the hard algebra problems: In my experience they can all be solved by hand relatively easily… but then again that is for me. If your daughter does not have the math background/HS courses necessary to deal with powers or whatever, her graphing calculator can be her best friend (assuming she doesnt make a silly mistake with parenthesis). Her options if she can’t solve an equation by hand include graphing the function and calculating min/max/intersection (for parabola problems) or plugging the function/equation into Y1 and then using the Yvars option to plug in each answer until she gets the one that makes the equation work.

Best of luck with the test
