How does one do this, aside from actually visiting the campus?

er…hire a counselor? it might be worth $5000 a month if you’re rich

Er…absolutely out of the question :)

google earth, Google Maps (street View), Flickr, review sites such as campusdirt

campusdirt.com gives me one of those search engines.

Request brochures if you don’t already get them, but we got many after PSAT’s. Visit their web site and read the campus newspaper online if available. Also one suggestion I read on this site is to visit local colleges to get a feel for large or small campuses or urban or rural locations. As a start write down how far from home both emotionally and financially is acceptable. What are the top three majors the student is interested in, many change majors. Should it be public or private and how much you can afford to pay. The last is probably the most imporant, many kids and parents are very dissappointed when acceptances come but the financial aid is lacking. Read this site daily, it is the most informative IMHO. Good luck.

for me it’s six aspects:

1-look into colleges that are strong in your major

2-location location location..some say that this is not very important , but it is..do you like cold, hot, rainny, city, big city , farm place etc etc etc.

3:Student body..a lot of drugs???preppy?more academic oriented?introvert?

4:Size: Monster like UT austin, or small like pomona college.

5:Faculty…are the professors more graduate level oriented, are they available, faculty/student ratio

6:connections connections connections!!!interships in your area, allumini network, prestige among your major…

also facilities…are there up to date labs (if you are engineer, computer, science majors that’s very important), good library for research,
i hope this helps..

Well, I guess I would like it to be more on the cold, city-ish, academic-oriented [I don’t plan on doing drugs or drinking…but how many people do?]; more on the large side but not huge student body…rest I’m not really sure about.

Figure out your priorities, describe them and your personality to CC, then research ensuing suggestions. Narrow the list, rinse and repeat if necessary.

“[I don’t plan on doing drugs or drinking…but how many people do?]”

More than you’d think

I’d say a good majority of most students going off to college plan on doing drugs, drinking, and whatnot. That’s not my idea of a good time, but all of those communications majors have to have something to do. ;)

I think my #1 priority is a good education. Most of all, I want to learn at college. My personality is more on the introverted, nerdy side…that’s all I can come up with.

Are there any good search engine type college searches, like the one at CollegeBoard?

Cold? City-ish? Heavy on academics? Nerdy? Sounds like the University of Chicago or Swarthmore, if your stats are good enough. Chicago’s bigger but not mega, Swat is quite small and suburban but easy access to Philadelphia (20 min by train). Both are deeply intellectual places with lots of students who self-identify as nerds. Chicago’s the colder of the two—no shortage of cold there!–but Philly’s plenty cold enough for most people.

I wouldn’t take this too seriously, but princetonreview.com has an on-line college search tool called “counselor-o-matic.” You plug in answers to a bunch of questions and it spits out some schools. Don’t take their word for it, but it’s a way of generating a list to start with. Then you can take a close look at the websites of those schools, ask around on CC to get more info, talk to friends, parents, HS GC, etc, look at several college guides, and so on.

Good luck.
