Finding a college roommate

My college uses RoomSync through Facebook, and I've been looking for a roommate since earlier this month. We have until July 14th to decide and then they'll pick one for us. Honestly, there are probably 30 girls using RoomSync, and most of them have either found a roommate already, or we have nothing in common. For example, they want an outgoing roommate that isn't shy. Well I have social anxiety, so that puts me out of the running. What do you all recommend? Even if I do find one that I like, it's not long until they've found a roommate. Is it too early to be looking for one?

This is my first time staying on campus, so please bear with me!

Can you go random for a roommate? To be honest, those online-dating-type roommate websites base “matches” off of pretty superficial things–the persona someone puts forth on Facebook, etc. I wouldn’t worry about it. There’s no guarantee that someone you meet on Facebook will be someone you want to live with.

@bodangles I guess I could try a random roommate, but I really just want my potential roommate to know what kind of person I am, etc. It’s going to be very awkward for me to room with someone that I won’t meet until the day I move in (I’m not sure how that works)? I’m not trying to use my anxiety as an excuse or crutch, but that’s just how it is.

The vast majority of college students have randomly assigned roommates, and for the most part, it works out fine. Even if you do find someone to room with beforehand, there are no guarantees that it’ll be any less awkward, considering this person that you met online is still pretty much a stranger. Just relax. If you find a roommate, that’s fine. If you don’t find a roommate, then that’s fine too. Many schools give out contact info for roommates before school starts so you can contact each other beforehand, if you want to, and even if your school doesn’t, you’ll be fine getting to know your roommate during the school year as well. Everyone seems to put a lot of emphasis on who they get as a roommate, but it really doesn’t matter that much. Unless you know this person well from high school or something else previously, everyone is going to pretty much be a stranger, and you never really know if you’ll get along with someone until you live with them.

It also sucks because I’m a transfer student so I won’t know anyone at all, so imagine how much it’s going to suck not knowing anything about my roommate. I’ll be alone on campus. The more I think about it, the more I’m starting to change my mind to commuting back and forth to school. I hate college so much.
