Finding a DO doctor to Shadow

Hello Everyone,

I have been doing some research online for weeks now looking to find osteopathic doctors to shadow. Have any of you shadowed DO doctors. If so, how did you contact the doctor you wanted to shadow? Was there a website you went on to find doctors or did you send out emails; because I never shadowed a doctor before, I feel weird just calling up a hospital on the phone and asking to shadow.

Here are 2 website to help get you started:

http://www.aacom.org/become-a-doctor/applying/shadowing

http://www.osteopathic.org/osteopathic-health/pages/find-a-do-search.aspx

The second is a DO locator. You can search by name, specialty or geographic location.

You can also ask for the names of nearby DOs who allow shadowing from the pre-med advisor at your school. The pre-med club may also maintain a list of doctors who allow students to shadow them.

If your family knows anyone who is a DO (even if that individual isn’t your care-provider), contact him/her and ask to shadow or recommend someone who may allow you to.

Another usual way to find a doctor to shadow is through volunteer sites. If you’ve done any clinical volunteering, ask the physicians you’ve come into contact with about shadowing.

Network. Network. network.

And get over “feeling weird” about cold calling and asking because that’s exactly what you need to do. Expect to get many “No” responses, but keep trying until someone says “Yes”.

D went to Chicago for UG, she cold called several DOs in CA which is closer to home, she was able to shadow a DO during the spring break. If she can, you can also.

@WayOutWestMom I guess I just have to get over my fear of cold calling DOs. Thanks for your help and you too @artloversplus
