Finding a job after Columbia

Is anyone here a bit nervous about finding work when we graduate? I know I am. It seems like I keep hearing that it's tough out there, and it's going to get tougher. My sister was telling me a story the other day about a guy whom she went to school with. He graduated summa cum laude from a good liberal arts college and is working at Comcast. I think he is answering phones.

^^ THe economy sucks right now. Hiring has been reduced significantly, but this isn't universal. And graduating from Columbia will give you the edge. This stuff is cyclical, though, it'll bounce back in the next 2-3 years...or eventually, anyways.

When do you graduate?

lol @ impractical liberal arts majors ;) Reminds me of the famous Marge Simpson line:

"Bart! Don't make fun of graduate students. They just made a terrible life choice!"

"Is anyone here a bit nervous about finding work when we graduate?"

you're class of 2011, you shouldn't be too worried, people on the street tell me the economy should begin to pick up later next year. If this is actually a depression, then things might be a little different and you might need to be worried.

Haha, what is it about that Marge line that sticks with us so deeply? I still can't shake it off.

I'm a 2011 too and well to be honest, I'm not too worried about it. A big part of my reason for choosing Columbia was the overwhelming amount of internship possibilities. I had one in the fall, I have one this winter, and am also applying to a bunch this summer (C'mon Accenture consulting, c'mon accenture consulting....). I think that if you have a good resume, on top of your ivy degree, you'll be abe to find a good job.

And, in my case anyway, I'm pretty free after college. I was thinking of moving back to France, the motherland, and working there for two years. I just need two years of employment afterwards before applying to an MBA, which is my goal.

It's all about having a plan. :)

...In others news; insomnia.

yeah, i was worried about this too..i'll be an undergrad next year.

i have heard so many stories about people that went to Ivies who cant find jobs. Too often, people think that going to an Ivy league school will just get you that job. Having a plan and direction is important.

And too often, once those same Ivy league kids get jobs, they think that having an Ivy league degree will allow them to keep that job and advance at the company.

^someone regretting his past complacency? :p

I have two friends that studied at U of Penn Wharton, graduated, couldn't find a job, and went to Stanford for their PhDs.

So... o.O

^ So they should have gone to Stanford in the first place? :)

The economy will stabilise given another 3-5 years. After which companies will start on a hiring frenzy to make up for all the workers that have been laid off in the recession. Don't worry too much.

I posted this because I am not only worried in general about jobs but also particularly worried because I'm pre-med with a not so great science GPA right now. What's more I'm at GS so I'm not that young (27), and I'm genuinely concerned that I won't have too many opportunities when it comes to my major, history. I'll be graduating in 2010 and from what I hear there will be more foreclosures coming, less credit, less investing, etc. Unfortunately and rather not surprising, we will be moving toward socialism as well. ***?

^by the way college confidential censors "what the f." I didn't expect the asterisks.

What's your major?
