Finding a job after graduating from GT

Because GT is in the south, I assume most graduates will end up working in the south. I hope to return to California, in the Bay Area, after college. Is that a possibility (high?) for me, or should I think about attending UCs if I wish to work in CA after college?

What is your major?

As a Computer Science major myself, I have found many opportunities with companies out in the Bay Area. If you are in a field (like CS) in which major companies exist in California, then you will certainly be able to get a job there. CA companies like Google recruit at GT regularly.

Im accepted as a chemE major, but I’m thinking about switching to matE.

GT and the big Bay Area colleges (Stanford and Berkeley) both recruit nationally, so you can go to any of those and end up anywhere. However, GT does have more Southeast recruiters and the other two have more Bay Area recruiters out of sheer convenience (why fly 5 hours to Atlanta when Berkeley is down the street?).

The hard think about targeting a specific area of the country is that you need to choose your major carefully. ChemE positions in the Bay Area are hard to come by. And when you find them, they pay the same in SF as they pay in Texas, Iowa, West Virginia, etc. A $65,000 / year salary really isn’t all that much when you’re paying $2500-3000 / month in rent for an apartment.

Hmmm is that the same case for matE too? I do realize that the bay area has tons of bioE and compE and EE jobs.

You might want to look at job postings in the area to see what sort of demand there is for different engineering majors.

That will also give you an idea of the type of specialization you’ll want within your major.

Thanks, I’ll give that a try
