Finding major for potential audio engineer (maybe??)

I’ve been searching for hours for what to major in. I know that I want to double major in CS and music technology or music production or audio engineering, something of that nature. I just can’t find the title for the 2nfd major. What would you major in to be the person who runs the recording session, then mixes and masters the track? I want to something like that, but also make my own music digitally (but not be a composition major?).

I am having a lot of trouble finding a name for this 2nd major. Also, what would be the difference in music technology, audio engineering, and music production? By the way, I have been preparing for auditions with the violin. so I do play the violin and have a strong musical background.

I know this is an old post but my son is wanting to go into the exact same majors as you. He is very talented with ableton, etc, and has done a lot of work with EDM and mixing. He “writes” his own EDM music (creating melodies) along with using other plugins. After a lot of research it seems audio engineering is the closest major, however many schools have that paired with instrumental performance to where the computer is not considered an instrument. So majoring in audio engineering requires you perform either with voice or another instrument. While my son is a great pianist and drummer he is not classically trained which is what many music programs require. So for him many of the required classes would not be of much relevance to him (vocal training, required choirs or orchestra, etc).

Also, the schools we found with good music programs (and there are very few that have audio engineering) don’t have strong or even ABET accredited computer science programs. I am interested in what you decided pertaining to a major.

ABET accreditation means nothing for CS. Stanford and CMU both lack ABET accreditation for their CS programs and are arguably the top two schools in the country for CS. I would focus on audio engineering or music production programs. Most schools have good CS programs.
