So I was just wondering...do you guys suggest finding roommates online through sites like URoomSurf.com or waiting for your college to assign you to one? I don't know how reliable those sites can be, and on some levels, it seems very superficial...I don't know, what are your thoughts (especially to those who have already gone through the process)?

Eh don’t be desperate. Colleges usually have questionnaires for this type of thing. I’d rather meet my roommate by surprise rather than searching for one.

I found mine through U room surf. We both matched up in like the mid-80%. Anyway, we actually met in person at a starbucks and we definitely clicked. Since we also have similar habits, I think we’ll work really well together. I didn’t want to risk a randomly selected roommate because I’m pretty quiet and studious and I wanted a roommate who was the same.

Personal experience: I met my roommate through a Facebook group for my school (it was one of those questionnaires for finding roommates) and we do NOT get along. Like, we would be friends, if we didn’t live together. Which, unfortunately, is what a lot of those questionnaires ask about…friendship qualities. Plus, someone may say they’re a neat freak, but, in reality…

I would definitely have gone 100% through random selection. You do NOT want to be best friends with your roomie.

I wouldn’t. Obviously, finding a compatible roommate IS hard, but for me at least, I’d rather have some control over the whole process. I mostly asked people 3 things 1) what time do you go to bed 2) how neat/messy are you and 3) how much do you plan on drinking/partying?

I wouldn’t be happy with 80% of the people who are going to my school, so I tried to eliminate some of the most inevitable conflict by finding someone with similar habits as me.

Does uroomsearch work for transfers as well as it does for freshmen?

^ I think its mainly for freshmen unless you don’t mind rooming with a freshman… I signed up as well and I will be a sophomore(really my 3rd year) but I saw it was all freshmen. I wanted a upperclassmen room so not going to work for me.

i had 3 random roommates and I got along with all of them great (4 technically). My current roommate is actually an exchange student from Hong Kong and she’s probably my favorite roommate to date. Interestingly enough, my best friend was my least favorite roommate as she slept at 10 and kicked me out of the room… and wouldn’t let me on the computer because it made noises.

"You do NOT want to be best friends with your roomie. "

Why not? I have the potential option of rooming with one of my best friends and I’m not really sure if it’s a good idea or not.

^

there’s nothing wrong with rooming with your best friend but it is encouraged that you don’t so that you get out of your comfort zone and meet new people. It’s all part of the colege experience and thrill of living with someone you don’t know.
