Fine arts and speech/debate requirement?

I meet all the requirements to be admissible to Mizzou, however, I do not have fine arts or speech/debate on my belt of coursework. First of all, my school never offered it. Second of all, I have never seen a college require such a thing. And third of all, I didn't know I'd be applying to Mizzou until my senior year.

Does anyone know anything about this fine arts and speech/debate requirement, and can you get in without those two odd requirements?

Here's where it says you need the two: Requirements - Mizzou Undergraduate Admissions

It can be a year of photography, graphic design, art history, music (band, orchestra or choir), theater, or dance. It was required in our High school for getting diploma.

Well…I did take Art 1 & 2 during my freshman and sophomore years, if that counts. As for speech/debate, those classes were never offered to me. Am I going to get rejected because of something like this?

I’m sure Art 1 & 2 are enough. In any case to get a peace of mind call them or send an email. My D. took a year of Graphic Design and it was enough to meet the requirement.

Hi there,

We had my daughter’s guidance councelor contact Mizzou about the fine arts requirement last year. I don’t remember seeing Speech/debate, we may have missed that.

We live in PA and neither are a requirement here. We were told by Mizzou not to worry if it’s not a requirement it will not be required for OOS kids. It is a requirement in Missouri, so this is why they require it (most kids are from Missouri).

My daughter was accepted this year without either of those (being OOS).

Here is the response from Mizzou:

Thank you for your interest in Mizzou! Hopefully I can help to answer your questions for you concerning the student you have been working with.

Fine arts would be anything related to music, art, dance, etc. If your school does not require a full credit of a fine arts course for your students to graduate then we can waive this requirement for out-of-state students. It’s currently a state-wide high school graduation requirement in Missouri, but we understand that’s not the same for every other state.

Please let me know if you have any further questions. Thank you!

The speech or debate is not mandatory even for Missouri Residents. It says one of your four units of English MAY be speech or debate.

“English: Four units, one of which may be in speech or debate; two units emphasizing composition or writing skills”
