It isn’t required in NC to have a Fine Arts credit for graduation… Am I reading it correctly that it IS a requirement of USC for admission?
Yes but don’t know how they handle out of state applicants that don’t have this because not required by their state. It is now a recommended course for all college-bound SC HS students. It is not technically required for HS diploma, but recommended with understanding that many colleges require it. Looking around it seems that many state supported schools do require it, but I know of at least one private that does not.
Call admissions and ask.
I haven’t taken a yearlong class for art because my school did not require it for graduation, and it is now too late for me to take one, even online. Would self-studying for AP Studio art or AP Art History and getting a 3, 4, or 5 on the exam fulfill the visual/performing arts requirement? Thank you so much!
^^Call admissions and ask. Anyone here is kind of guessing.
@scmom12 - Most of these forums are built on guessing I was just hoping someone here would have a “Yes, I applied to USC without a fine arts credit and still got in…” response. But I will call. I’ll update this thread when I find out for those who also have this question.
^^^That will be a help to students current applying. The reason I always advise calling for these kind of issues is that things change. Maybe they had leeway about it last year, but this year it’s a hard and fast rule. Before 2011 it wasn’t a thing. Housing changed the way it worked almost every year my D was there. It just helps to keep in mind that the current website and calling an admissions counselor (or housing or whatever) is still best.
Got a response in email:
Thank you for your email. UofSC’s required high school courses does include one unit of fine arts. Please note that it is our only flexible requirement and a qualified student would not be denied admission simply because he/she was missing the fine arts unit.
