Fine Tuning Reading Comprehension Skills

So I recently completed the 2006-2007 and the 2007-2008 Official SAT Practice Tests and noticed that on each reading comprehension passage i seem to answer 0 to 3 questions incorrectly. All but two of my errors (one of which was simply a careless mistake) involved questions that asked me to interpret the definition of a word based on its context in the passage or to determine the significance of a particular word that was used at some point in the passage. does anyone have any tips on how to get better at these types of questions?

So i'm assuming that there's no specific systematic way to approach and answer those two types of questions? :(

use grammatix

If you have difficulty deciphering the meaning of words in context, the most obvious thing to do is practice. Assuming your already a fairly strong reader, you can just do more of vocab in context questions. Keep in mind that the words in context aren't always what they mean, you have to read the entire sentence(sometimes the entire paragraph) to get a sense of how the AUTHOR is using the word. Maybe you're simply choosing the actual definition and not paying attention to how the author uses it. Practice and you will get better at it, these questions can become rediculously easy once you get the hang of it.

Hope that helps.

what's grammatix?

just beware that you don't need to contact Grammatix. They will not reply.

Grammatix's sentence completion is very nice. Their passage-reading is alright.

Try subbing the word in, and use the word in context. These tend to be the easier questions, so with a bit of practice you'll improve.

Alright, I have been working with a Kaplan Sat Prep book and it keeps referring to "the first third of the paragraph." What is that exactly. I can't figure it out. Please help!

It's probably just saying to read the first paragraph to get the main idea.
