Hi, I have finished all of the requirements for my major except for the last English course. I have put it as planned on my uc application for the spring semester. Would this affect my application?

There have been posts floating around on CC saying that UCSB frowns down on people who leave their English requirements until Spring 2013. However, there is a mixed response coming from people about this so it’s not 100% accurate. Can you take your English course next quarter (Winter 2013)? You can always update your Winter/Spring schedule in January when you do the Academic Update.

The only UCs I applied to are UCSD, UCB and UCLA. How will they look at this? I can’t find any information on the UC website that says I need to finish Math / English by fall.

You’re fine. The UC’s don’t expect you to finish all of your major pre-reqs by Fall. Some of the UC’s don’t like you STARTING your CORE requirements after Fall. From what it sounds like you’ve already started these requirements. If you’re taking your “last” English course, I’m assuming you already completed an English course. As long as you’ve completed a UC transferable math course then you’re in good shape.

I gave a lengthy explanation as to why SOME of the UCs are strict about core requirements in this thread earlier:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/uc-transfers/1423220-ucb-adviser-igetc-math-spring-not-frowned-upon.html

It could really ruin your chances. If you look at the the “2012 official transfer thread”, there are a few people that got denied from some UC’s because they didn’t have the math or English completed by fall.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/uc-transfers/1307972-2012-official-uc-transfer-decisions-thread.html

When a UCSB representative came to my CC, I asked him what my chances were at getting in. He said since my major was not impacted and that I should easily get in with only 2/5 prerequisites completed and my current GPA. Then he asked me if I will have the transferable math and English completed by Fall. I told him that I won’t have math completed. He pretty much nodded his head and said “you probably are not going to get in then”. I asked him why, and he said “I’m one of the people(or persons; I don’t know what word I need to use lol) that looks at the applications and I can tell you trends we tend to have. One of those trends is denying people that don’t have those classes completed by fall.” He said it was because “they get so many applications”. I guess it’s a way to weave out the weak applicants. I’m pretty other schools that also get a lot of applications like UCLA and UCB do the same thing. I’m not saying I’m 100% correct, but I won’t surprised if they do.

As long as it’s completed in the spring–and not the summer before transfer–you’ll be fine. I think what is generally meant by “completed by the fall” is the term before transferring–i.e. spring, and not during the fall term in which you applied.

Wow ok. mermaker, do you have any evidence to support that? I don’t really care for UCSB since I only applied to UCSD, UCB and UCLA. The link you posted only contained people who were accepted, not really helpful.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/uc-transfers/921762-ucsb-rejection-2.html?highlight=rejected+ucsb

Post #23 and #30. There are plenty more if you want to go back and look through the old threads. UCSB has been known to be strict if you’ve started your core requirements late. Some of the other UC’s are more lenient. But it’s definitely best to prioritize your core requirements over anything else so that they’re finished early on. That way the UC’s don’t have to speculate whether you’ll be eligible for admission.

Edit:
Here’s another one.
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/uc-transfers/901498-rejected-ucsb-3-6-gpa.html?highlight=rejected+ucsb

@dilapidatedmind Thank you for that.

So this only matters if I applied to UCSB?

English and math are definitely a matter, however, it shouldn’t be that simple. I have read the thread above, and the OP mentioned UCSB admission guy said “they couldn’t accept people have nothing done” (or something like that). Apparently something wrong with the OP’s major related classes or GE classes. However this is just my opinion.

And i believe the reasons for those guys who got in UCSB with 3.2 gpa and have the same major shouldn’t be just simply because they have their math and english completed. It is no doubt a important factor, but i don’t think it is important enough to erase the gap between 3.6 and 3.2 gpa.

Right, ok. All of this only matters if I want to go to UCSB? Again, I don’t really care about how UCSB does admission.

UCSB was just an example; each UC has their own policy. If you want any valid reassurance you should call admissions and ask them how they view completing the core requirements in spring. They may not directly view it as a negative, but you have to imagine that in a situation where two applicants have similar stats and they have to decide between the two that it could be a determining factor.

For the colleges you listed I couldn’t imagine it being an issue at UCSD. UCSD admissions tend to focus heavily on your overall GPA, almost exclusively so. For UCLA and UC Berkeley I couldn’t tell you. In the first thread I posted someone mentioned that they called UC Berkeley and they were told that it isn’t an issue. My advice is to just call them and see for yourself.

Ok thanks :)

Anytime. Actually, your situation wasn’t exactly clear to me. Have you taken and passed a transferable English class already (and now you only have one left)? And did you already complete a transferable math class? If the answer is yes to both then you have nothing to worry about. If you’re completing one of your major pre-reqs in spring that’s something that they expect. As long as it’s not a core requirement or a significant number of major pre-reqs then it’s not an issue.

Yea I finished all of my math requirements. I have finished English 101 class too.

Then you’re fine! Sometimes, the UCs don’t like to see you starting the requirements after fall (one transferable math and english courses), but you’ve actually nearly completed them. You’ve proven you can pass a transferable English course, so taking one in spring shouldn’t be an issue. Also, it’s very common to finish a “few” of your major pre-reqs (core requirements are the ones to worry about) in spring, so that’s something that they expect. I hope that gives you some relief. You shouldn’t have anything to worry about in that regard. Good luck!
