Finishing pre-med reqs at a CC then transferring to university?

My friend is finishing his pre reqs at a community college for 2 years then transferring to a university to graduate...do you think that'll get him into medical school if he made a 4.0 for pre reqs? Will med schools be able to see where he took the pre reqs?

Just curious cause he keeps telling me he'll get in for sure... sounds too good of a plan...

Others can correct me if I’m wrong, but I’ve heard that med schools are fine with students going to the first 2 years at a CC.

I don’t know if this is recommended, but if the pre-reqs are taken at a CC, it might be a good idea to take some higher level courses at the 4 year to further validate the CC grades.

Med schools don’t like it if you’re at a 4 year and you take your pre-reqs “on the side” at a CC.

That said, there are no guarantees, so your friend can’t be “sure” that he’ll get into med school…he doesn’t even have MCAT scores yet.

Pre-Reqs should not be taken at a CC.

So, are you saying that a student should take everything else, transfer, and then take all pre-reqs at the 4 year?

Are you saying the student can’t even take - say Cal I …or Bio I or Chem I? That seems a bit extreme.

Just my opinion, but I would take English courses and Calc and Stats and gen-ed courses at my CC, and leave as much of my Bio and Chem for my 4 year as I could. There are pre-req’s and then there are pre-req’s. If I did take my intro bio and chem courses at CC , I’d plan on taking upper-level courses in each to show mastery at the 4 year college level to remove any doubt of my abilities in those areas. I would not take organic at a CC.

In fact, if I was going the CC route, I’d probably be thinking about applying the summer after graduation (taking a gap year to apply) so I could be sure to have 2 full years of grades from my degree granting institution -just to be safe and to give my rec writers and pre-med committee a fair chance to love me. ;)

Hey curm,

I’d do the same. And I’d take it one step further, avoiding community college at all costs, and doing my best to earn some merit aid at a university I could afford so that I wouldn’t be at the community college at all with my medical school aspirations.

(yes, I know there’s more than money to consider with community colleges v universities, but it seems like $$$ is always a major concern)

Yes, I can see avoiding a CC if possible…maybe commuting to a nearby state school.
