Fire Safety

As the parent of an incoming freshman, I was just wondering if anyone could tell me whether the freshmen housing on Old Campus have any type of fire safety features i.e. fire escapes, sprinkler systems, smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors etc.

Thank you!!

[Dormitory Regulations | Yale College](http://yalecollege.yale.edu/content/dormitory-regulations)

Section G covers this.

Yeah, we have emergency exits in suites, fire alarms AND sprinklers in every room. The emergency exits are actually problems sometimes. They are REALLY loud and if you accidentally open one, it is excruciatingly annoying (as in you’ll have to leave your room) and Yale Security takes forever to come shut it off. (They only take forever if you call in to let them know it was an accident. Otherwise, firefighters come and stuff, which is why you wanna call ahead of time. But they no longer place it as a priority.)

Thank you both. I am assuming from your answers that there are no actual fire escapes. Would it be too embarassing for our child if we sent along one of those 3-4 story rope ladder fire escape systems? Have you ever seen anyone with those in the residences?

No, I haven’t. Hmm, the dorms are pretty safe and the chances of there being a fire is VERY, VERY slim. Even then, the fire precautions should do the trick. I think the ladder would be an overkill and has the potential of being used for non-fire related things.

Thanks, we’ll hold on the ladder and at least that’s one saving for us this freshman year  lol.

My first thought was also that the ladder might be used for other exploits.

Many of the buildings at Yale have multiple entryways, allowing people to exit down a different stairway if there were a fire in one of the entryways.

Thank you as well. I can relate to the other exploits comment - I certainly wouldn’t want my child to copy my behavior when I was at college.
