fired

will being fired from a job that you specifiied on a college application deter your chances of being accepted. just a simple question.

I can't think of any reason why you would have to tell the college that you were fired so I doubt that it would impact your application.

i know, but if i told them that i worked for a job, and they check wtih the company to see if i worked that job, the company will probably tell them that i was fired. would they not. by the way, is it typical for some high schoolers to get fired from their job for stupid stuff

I agree with Northstarmom, you have no reason to be obligated to reveal why that job ended when it did. The college is NOT going to call up your previous jobs. This is not a job application where that happens, trust me.

If it makes you feel any better, back when I was in high school ages ago, I had a job as a cashier at a sporting goods store. I must have made a mistake on the cash register. I was fired. By the way, math was my best subject. I went on to Tufts University and got a graduate degree at Harvard.

My niece, who is currently a freshman at a pretty good school, was fired, I believe from her waitress job during senior year for being caught smoking pot in the parking lot (from what I have heard). She subsequently got a new job. None of this is anything the college would be privy too.

You are NOT obligated to tell why the job ended. Give the dates of your employment and focus on what you learned by working there.

susan, i appreciate it. i really do because i was trippin last night. thank you too northstarr mom.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep, I was fired from a snooty women's clothing store for "not catching on fast enough." Apparently, I annoyed the boss by taking too long to figure out where to rehang all the clothes and asking too frequently what I should be doing.
Not that I'm bitter, or anything.

Eely, think of it this way...you are going to college and moving on to bigger and better jobs.....and you can tell this story to your kids.

For some reason my mom has told my kids how I got fired as a cashier back in high school. I think she has added or changed the story some but all I know is that from time to time, my kids bring this one up!

thats ridiculous...dont worry about it...what do you think is better: for someone to get out there, find a job, get fired for screwin up one time, and then learning something about the real world and not making the same mistake.....or someone who does not take any initiative and does nothing...

You learn from your experiences...colleges definitely understand that....and also, theres the point that everyone else made...that college is not going to call your employers...they have no reason to unless you get a recommendation letter from them...
