do you guys know if getting fired will scar you for the rest of your life in terms of landing a great job. i am going to ga tech this year, and even though i am confident in the education i am going to receive, i am parnoid about getting a job afterwards. will me being fired scar me??

Just want to clear this up. You've been accepted to college and feel that it's going to be a good experience, right? Your concern at this point in your life is that you will get a good job after college and then be fired? You are getting WAY too far ahead of the game if this is what you are worried about.

Congrats on your college acceptance btw. Go to school. Study hard. Get involved in campus activities. (You will have a much better chance at being hired if you appear to have had a balanced college experience. Not focused entirely on grades.) Have fun!

To answer your question tho'...being fired is never "fun". It can affect your self esteem but only to the extent that YOU allow it. Sometimes losing a job is your fault - you screwed up. When you go to your next potential employer and if the subject comes up, take responsibility for your mistake and explain what you learned from that experience. The interviewer will want to see maturity in you not hear - 'Yeah, I got fired because my supervisor was a jerk.' OTOH, your supervisor may BE a jerk and fire you for personal power trip (happens all too often), but tell potential employer that there were "personality differences" and try to leave it at that. Take the high road always.

Will being fired scar you for life? Only if you let it. If/when it happens - get up, get over it and get on with it!

Finally - you are worried about losing something that you don't have yet. Stay focused on the present with an eye on the future. It's good to have a plan. But if you are going to plan this future - plan it with the idea that you will have success. You have been accepted to a great school. Enjoy it and visualize your future as the one you want - the one that will satisfy you - and do your best to take the steps that will get you there. Good luck.

Why would you be thinking this already? You've already lost the battle mentally. Get those nasty thoughts outta your head!

I've been fired before back when I was in school. I was a bouncer in a bar (not a serious job but still) and knocked out my manager. Well, fired/quit but you get my point.

Like CopterMom said "Will being fired scar you for life? Only if you let it. If/when it happens - get up, get over it and get on with it!"

Keep your chin up!

A huge percentage of the labor force has been fired, laid off or out of a job for some reason. There are very few reasons for begin fired that really scar you for life and you have to work hard to do those (ask Ken Lay).

What matters more is what you learn from each experience and how you do your job.

O, and I forgot to mention that it never affected me!:)

Being fired can be a good thing, unless you are fired for unlawful activity like drug use, inebriation on the job, or stealing stuff.

Otherwise, some employers (if they have any ability to creatively think--most do) will find that being fired means you could have strong leadership skills...so it's worth taking a deeper look for these savvy employers.

BTW, I've been fired more than once for the same thing (not agreeing with certain ways things were done, and voicing my concerns, and ticking off some "cattle" eh, coworkers along the way). Some companies, those who appreciate cattle minded folk, don't like independent thinkers who voice ways to streamline processes or make work more efficient and effective. However, being fired for stuff like this has actually helped me land better jobs!
