We are having a timed writing tomorrow over our summer reading, pride and prejudice. We have a timed writing tomorrow that will count as a test which is 70% of our grade. Our teacher tried to explain how to write it today in the last few minutes of class, but I don't feel like i'll completely understand until i see an example essay. My teacher said that ppl normally score a 4 or 5 on the ap scale for the first timed writing which is about a C because we are still in lang mode. She said that after we write our first one and see our mistakes then we will tremendously improve. I don't want to wait for the learning curve. I want an a in this class and don't want to settle for a C on the first major test just because that is the trend. Any tips?

Write about the symbolism present in the story, the literary tools Austen used, and the structure of how the story was written. Then explain how it all contributes to the author’s overall meaning when writing the story. Of course, use these to answer the prompt.

could you specifically explain how this differs from ap lang? My teacher says we are not writing about purpose anymore but about the authors meaning. im having a hard time discerning the two.

Thanks!

While it is important to keep your teacher’s comments in mind (she is the one marking it after all) you shouldn’t let them influence you too much. A lot of the times when people alter their writing styles significantly to suit the teacher, especially when they are not sure what the teacher wants, they end up with a lower grade than they would otherwise have.

I don’t think that AP Language and AP Literature essays differ much.
