I just finished an IB Economics class with a C in the first trimester of my senior year. It is the first C and only C on my high school transcript. How much will this hurt me? My GPA is a 3.7, I have a mix of A’s and B’s. Again, I have never finished with a grade below a B- in a trimester in a class, and I so stressed about this. My top choices are University of Colorado Boulder, Indiana University Bloomington, Syracuse, and University of Pittsburgh. How much will the lone C hurt me in the college’s decision?
What are your other grades like? If you can get a B in the next trimester, it will show that you struggled and then persevered.
The course is IB Economics, it is a two-year course. Every single grade on my transcript is a B- or higher - I have never gotten a C+ or below in any class. Do you think that it will hurt me aside from getting a B in the next trimester?
I think it will be okay…i remember for my daughter that her english teacer for IB SL was giving her a 3 (out of 7) for the first semester…I was talking to him about it and he said “well she hasn’t learned evrything yet” which is not how US schools do it (this was in Germany)…but her grades trended up for the rest of the year.
SO mke sure to get a B or above next quarter so they can see that you have figured out how to study for tougher classes.
This is HL?
This is SL
Did it hurt her when she applied to colleges?
SL economics over 2 yrs shouldn’t be hard, you might have to work out your approach. Why did you take it? SLs outside of the diploma are worthless for credit, a 2 yr SL is baffling to me, did you have no choice?.
Your ACT plus a lower GPA means you should make sure you have some safe instate option lined up.
I took it because I am a young entrepreneur, and I felt like I would benefit from learning about economics rather than history. I am also interested In economics. Why is it pointless without the diploma? I respect your opinion I just want to know what makes you say that.
SLs are not seen as rigorous and hold no value outside of the diploma. But the real point is that an SL should not be kicking your butt if you are taking it for just the love of the subject.
Have you been told otherwise? My kids are IBD and I do know that sometimes the IB spin gets a bit much.
